Overall rating 4/5It’s a steadfast, sensible MPV that’s all about space, comfort and a smooth drive – especially on long journeys or busy school runs. Built for families and those needing serious space, the Ford Galaxy stands at the top of the people carrier class. It’s praised for its adaptable seating and real-world practicality. The modern third-generation Galaxy built on its predecessors' strengths with even sharper driving and advanced tech. Earlier generations, dating back to 1995, also have a solid reputation, but the most recent version from 2015 onwards is the most polished yet. Against rivals like the Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra, the Galaxy is often the driver’s choice, thanks to more spacious seating and engaging driving. There are also plenty of options, too, from efficient diesel and petrol engines to trims jam-packed with features.
The Galaxy is well-equipped for your peace of mind. All models have multiple airbags, stability control and ISOFIX child seat points. Later cars from 2015 onwards scored five stars from Euro NCAP's crash testing. These can include more modern features like lane keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking and helpful cameras.
Most of the Galaxys on offer have a 2.0-litre diesel engine ranging from 118 to 237bhp. There are two petrol engines as well: a 1.5-litre or 2.0 litre turbocharged option.
Expect a good level of standard equipment, including front and rear sensors and touchscreen infotainment with Bluetooth and DAB radio. Higher trims add on the likes of sat nav, a rear camera, heated seats and an electric tailgate.
Diesel engines are generally the most economical, returning between 38 and 46mpg on average. Petrol engines sit at almost 35mpg. Automatic gearboxes and all-wheel-drive options usually return slightly lower figures, which is worth considering if you’re watching running costs.
Inspect for heavy wear on seats and trims as these cars often lead busy family lives. Give extra attention to folding rear seats and the sliding mechanisms. Early cars had a handful of recalls, including issues with rear suspension bolts and headlights, so check the car’s history. Once you've found your dream used car, why not book The AA Vehicle Inspection service for a full health check?
Most owners praise the Galaxy for being hardy and durable and past surveys put the car's reliability above average compared to other MPVs. Regular maintenance will help ensure any used car continues to run well.
