Overall rating 4.5/5Need as much space as possible from your next people carrier? The Ford Tourneo Custom could be here to help. As a van-based MPV it’s got more space to offer than many rivals and can gladly swallow up large amounts of luggage to go with it.

Overall rating 4.5/5Introduced in 2013, the Ford Tourneo Custom is a rival to other large MPVs like the Ford S-Max and Seat Alhambra. But whereas those models are mostly car-based, the Tourneo Custom is definitely a van first and a people carrier second. This helps it to bring a lot of space. With space for eight or nine, the Ford Tourneo Custom is ideal for larger groups or big families, while its rugged van-based underpinnings should be reliable and simple mechanically. It’s worth remembering that the Tourneo Custom was facelifted in 2018, bringing a sharper look and more technology, before it was phased out in 2023.
The Ford Tourneo Custom comes with features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard, which can help to reduce the impact of a collision. Plus, you get hill start assist, which can really come in useful on a car as large as this. Options at the time of launch included blind-spot assist and lane-keep assist, so check out the specification of the used model you’re looking at to see if these are fitted.
Diesel power dominates the Ford Tourneo Custom line-up, with a 2.2-litre engine available in a variety of stages of tune. There’s a choice of a six-speed automatic and manual gearboxes, too. Later on in the Tourneo Custom’s production run, a plug-in hybrid version was added into the mix, and this could be a good option for drivers who mainly do local journeys.
Front and rear parking sensors are fitted as standard to the Ford Tourneo Custom and will come in handy when parking this rather large vehicle. Base cars get a small 4.2-inch central TFT display, too, which is rather limited in functionality. Step up to the Titanium specification and you’ll get a proper 8.0-inch infotainment system with full media and navigation functions. At this grade, you’ll get a reversing camera, too.
Expect to get around 40mpg from diesel-powered Tourneo Customs, with efficiency improving over longer distances. You might see a small uptick in efficiency when choosing the automatic version, too. The less popular PHEV could return up to 70mpg, but you’ll need to keep it charged up frequently in order to get the best possible fuel efficiency.
The Tourneo Custom has proven to be a largely reliable option, but you should still check out certain areas. Check the sills for rust and make sure there haven’t been any car park scrapes to the corners or rear. It’s also a good idea to make sure that the side sliding doors operate smoothly, with locks that engage properly. If you’d like a professional to take a look at a car you’re considering, then an AA Vehicle Inspection is here to help. A trained engineer will take a look at the car and produce a detailed report highlighting their findings.
Thanks to its van-based underpinnings, the Ford Tourneo Custom is a largely reliable option, though we’d still make sure that any model you look at has a full service history with plenty of routine maintenance. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help in this area and determine how well a car has been looked after.
The Ford Tourneo has a 1.0-litre plug-in hybrid engine or a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel.
