Overall rating 4.5/5The Ford B-Max is a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) designed with families in mind. Its standout feature is the sliding rear doors, which don't have a central pillar, allowing impressive 1.5-metre-long access, especially helpful when strapping children into car seats or loading bigger items. Launched in 2012 and produced up to 2017, it features parts from the popular Ford Fiesta and competes with the Vauxhall Meriva and Citroën C3 Picasso. The B-Max offers economical engine choices for city driving and delivers a smooth gearbox and well-weighted steering for a decent ride.
The B-Max has a strong suite of safety features, including multiple airbags, tyre pressure warnings, and hill start assist on some models. Euro NCAP's crash testing team gave it a top five-star rating in 2012.
The B-Max has several engine options, including a 1.4-litre petrol, a 1.6-litre petrol and Ford’s efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost in 98bhp and 119bhp versions. Diesel fans could choose a 1.5-litre TDCi in either 74bhp or 94bhp for more economical driving.
Entry-level models include basics such as radio and air conditioning, while mid-level trims and above add heated windscreens. Infotainment controls use small buttons, which can feel fiddly at first.
Fuel economy varies by engine. The popular 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol achieves an mpg in the mid-50s, while the diesel can reach over 70mpg, making it best for higher-mileage drivers. The larger petrol engines are less efficient, claiming between 44 and 47mpg.
Inspect for interior wear, broken trims and windscreen chips, especially if it's a heated windscreen, which will cost more to fix. Automatic gearbox models should change smoothly, so check for that too. For diesel models, ensure the diesel particulate filter is in good order. The Ford B-Max scores high in reliability surveys and reported issues are typically minor. Overall, the B-Max sits above average for reliability among used MPVs.
