Let’s say your budget is limited but you want a solid and mature hatchback that feels premium than others. Yes, you guessed it. The answer is Polo!
The fifth generation Polo took the game further and won the European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year accolades. Engine options range from 1.0 to 2.0-litre units (both petrol and diesel) with numerous trims and of course, the spicier GTI variants. As a used purchase, you can’t really go wrong with a Volkswagen Polo. You can find them everywhere and there are plenty of options to choose from.
I’d check the service history first. The 1.0 TSI engine in the Polo is generally reliable, but irregular servicing can lead to premature oil pump wear – leading to turbo and timing chain issues. I’d also check for signs of water ingress in the boot and footwells, which can be caused by blocked drainage channels – This is a relatively quick and inexpensive fix but can leave the carpets feeling damp. Another thing to note is that older models tend to suffer from rattles around the dashboard area as interior trim ages.
