Overall rating 4.5/5The Honda Civic Type R has been a go-faster member of this brand’s range of cars since the late 1990s. Since then, it has morphed with each generation, bringing advancements in technology while still providing a heightened level of performance over the standard Civic hatchback.
One of the most popular generations was the version between 2017 and 2022. Today, it represents great value for money and it’s this model that we’ll be focusing on here.
The Honda Civic Type R comes equipped with a good level of safety equipment, including a lane-keep assist system - which activates a warning should the car detect that it is drifting out of a lane - alongside a suite of autonomous emergency braking functions. When the standard Civic - upon which the Type R is based - was tested by Euro NCAP in 2017, it scored a full five stars with reviewers praising its strong level of adult occupant protection.
The Civic Type R is only available with a single engine choice. It’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol with 316bhp linked to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The good news is that though there’s only one engine option, it’s a very strong unit which gives the Civic Type R a lot of performance. There’s no automatic gearbox version, however, with the only variant being the six-speed manual.
The Honda Civic Type R is well equipped with a central 7.0-inch touchscreen there to handle media and navigation functions while all models also get climate control and bright LED headlights. Look out for ‘GT’ versions if you’re after a car with the most level of equipment as these versions get extra features such as full front and rear parking sensors and dual-zone climate control.
Expect to get around 33mpg from the Civic Type R during mixed driving, though if you drive it in a keener fashion expect these figures to tumble quickly.
As a performance car, there’s a good chance that a used Civic Type R will have been driven quite quickly at some point in its life. That’s why we recommend checking the tyres for excess wear and making sure that the brakes operate smoothly and accurately. Any juddering or squeaking isn’t a good sign. It’s a good idea to have a car like the Civic Type R checked over by a qualified specialist, which is where an AA vehicle inspection can help. With it, you’ll get a detailed report highlighting any key issues which could be affecting a car you’re looking at.
Much the same as the standard Honda Civic, the Type R has a good reputation for reliability and shouldn’t prove too costly to maintain or repair. Prices for replacement tyres and brakes will be more, however, so it’s worth bearing this in mind.If you’d like to double-check that any Honda Civic Type R you’re looking at is in good shape, then consider an AA vehicle inspection.
