Overall rating 4.5/5The HR-V name was first used by Honda in the late 1990s, sitting on a boxy, off-road-inspired SUV. It was soon discontinued but, in 2015, Honda chose to revive the HR-V title and apply it to a funky-looking compact SUV that would rival the likes of the Nissan Juke in the smaller end of the market. Today, you’ll find a plentiful supply of this generation of HR-V, available with good standard equipment levels and some efficient engine options.

The HR-V comes equipped with a good level of standard features, including city-focused Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and a full electronic stability system that can help to keep things under control in an emergency situation. When tested by Euro NCAP in 2015, the Honda HR-V was awarded a full five-stars alongside good scores for adult and child occupant protection.
There are two engine options available with the HR-V. The first is a 1.5-litre petrol available in one of two states of tune, while the second is a turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel. This latter option will be a better choice for long-distance drivers owing to its additional efficiency at higher speeds. You’ll find that most HR-V models come with a six-speed manual gearbox, though an automatic was an option when the car was new.
All versions of the HR-V come equipped with features such as climate control, front electric windows and cruise control for those longer journeys. Step up to more luxurious trims - such as EX - and you’ll find additional features such as leather upholstery, satellite navigation and heated seats put into the mix.
Neither engine choice on the HR-V should prove too costly to fuel, with the petrol option able to deliver up to 49mpg during mixed driving. You’ll get slightly better fuel economy on the automatic versions, too. Switch to the diesel and you’ll see that fuel efficiency increase to around 68mpg and, again, it’ll be more in those cars with an automatic gearbox.
The Honda HR-V is a car which is popular with families, so look around the interior for any signs of damage or wear. Likewise, this car’s urban focus means that it may have sustained some car-park prangs or alloy wheel scuffs. If you’d like a closer look at any used car you’re considering the purchase of, consider an AA vehicle inspection which will provide a detailed report highlighting the top issues with the car you’re looking at.
As with other Honda models, the HR-V has a great reputation for reliability so it shouldn’t prove too much of a bother in this department. However, if you’d like some added peace of mind, then consider an AA vehicle inspection for additional clarity about a car you’re looking at.
The Honda HR-V is available with a 1.5-litre petrol or a 1.6-litre diesel engine
