Overall rating 4.5/5The Civic has been a core part of the Honda range for decades and while the very first-generation car introduced a compact shape it has evolved to become more upmarket and more spacious in every way.

Overall rating 4.5/5The Honda Civic can trace its roots right the way back to the early 1970s when it arrived as a compact and low-cost means of transport. Fast forward to the present day and the Civic is certainly larger, while offering more technology and a greater level of efficiency.
However, Honda hasn’t lost sight of the ease-of-use which made the Civic so popular and you’ll find it present on the latest models. One of the most popular has been the tenth-generation car - launched in 2017 - and it’s this which we’ll focus on here.

The Honda Civic is equipped with a full range of autonomous emergency braking systems designed for a variety of scenarios, including city motoring. Plus, it gets both speed and lane assistance systems. A good range of airbags comes equipped to all models while ISOFIX child seat mounting points can be found on the two outer rear seats.
The Honda Civic is available with 1.0-, 1.5-, and 2.0-litre petrol engines, with that final option being available on the performance Type R model. There’s the option of either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, too. The Type R is manual-only, however. Later, a 1.6-litre diesel was added to the range though it was relatively short-lived and was discontinued in 2020.
The Civic comes is reasonably well equipped as standard, with entry-level ‘S’ models getting features such as electric windows and remote central locking. However, ‘SE’ cars are a better proposition as these get climate control, heated mirrors and body-coloured bumpers. Plush ‘EX’ models gain a load more features including leather upholstery, additional lumbar support and parking sensors.
Both 1.0- and 1.5-litre petrol engines will return respectable fuel efficiency, with Honda claiming up to 46.3mpg for both, and slightly less for those versions equipped with an automatic gearbox. If you’re after the best-possible efficiency then it’s the diesel you’ll need, as it can bring up to 64.2mpg in cars with a manual gearbox. Expect only slightly less than that on automatic versions, however.
There are some key areas to check on the Honda Civic. Some drivers have reported squeaky brakes on their cars, so make sure the ones on any car you’re looking at are working without fault. If you’re not happy conducting these more mechanical checks, then an AA vehicle inspection could be a great place to start. With it, a trained engineer will conduct a full survey of a car you’re considering the purchase of before producing a detailed report of their findings.
The Civic is a very reliable car, with few owners reporting big issues with their cars. With regular servicing, there’s no reason why a Civic can’t give you thousands of trouble-free motoring miles. However, if you’d like to feel even more at ease, then an AA vehicle inspection could help. Check out the variety of options we offer today.
The Honda Civic is available with 1.0-, 1.5- and 2.0-litre petrol engines, as well as a 1.6-litre diesel. Automatic and manual gearboxes are also available.
