Overall rating 4.5/5The Honda FR-V offers something a little different for UK families: a compact people carrier with seating for six adults yet still plenty of boot space for prams or luggage. Produced from 2004 to 2009, this MPV also shines for its premium quality cabin, smooth drive and typically steadfast Honda reliability. All this comes without taking up extra space on the road and plenty of head and legroom. With its innovative layout, the FR-V rivals the Vauxhall Zafira. Post-2007 models benefit from refined looks and a better diesel engine – known for more economy and an even more relaxed ride.
All Honda FR-Vs come well equipped for their era, with ABS, traction control and front, side and curtain airbags. Euro NCAP gave it four out of five stars for adult occupant safety, which was competitive at launch but not quite class-leading today.
The FR-V has reliable 1.7-, 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and a strong 2.2 i-CTDi diesel from 2007. All engines use timing chains for lower maintenance. The diesel is highly rated for torque and real-world economy, particularly if you drive longer distances.
Standard FR-Vs come with air conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking and a CD player. More expensive trims feature climate and cruise control. As it was last built in 2009, the car won't contain modern tech – expect only basic infotainment and manual controls.
On average, the petrol engines range from around 33 to 37mpg. The 2.2 diesel can achieve around 45mpg in real-world driving. All FR-Vs tend to be reasonably economical for their size though, especially if serviced well.
Focus on signs of heavy family use inside – check seat mechanisms like the sliding seat rails and the cabin trim. Listen for noisy air conditioning or engine timing noise. Don't forget to look for a full service record for any car. Why not consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection service before you buy to have the work done for you?
The Honda FR-V has a reputation for excellent reliability, in line with Honda’s wider reputation. Owners rate it highly for a solid build and report few major faults. Regular servicing is vital, though, especially to maintain things like brakes.
