Volvo might have been known as THE manufacturer of estate cars not so long ago, but these days it’s SUVs that dominate the Swedish firm’s range. And in terms of outright sales, it’s the XC40 that rules the way. With its cool styling, roomy and upmarket interior and generous safety kit, it has broad appeal, not least for families. On the used market, you can pretty much take your pick of the powertrains on offer, with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric models all available. Choose the R-Design if you want something a bit sportier looking.

About Volvo XC40

SUVs now make up a huge part of Volvo’s range, and things began with the large seven-seat XC90 in the early 2000s. A mid-size XC60 arrived in 2008 and then more recently there has been the introduction of a more compact XC40.

Rivalling the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, the XC40 arrived in showrooms in early 2018, offering a stylish design, well-built interior and impressive safety rating. Initially launched with petrol and diesel engines, the XC40 line-up has more recently been expanded with a plug-in hybrid and powerful all-electric version.

Why buy a used XC40?

The XC40 sits in one of the most populated new car classes around, but really is able to stand out for all the right reasons.

The first thing to admire about it is the way it looks, as Volvo has successfully managed to incorporate the sharp styling of its larger models onto the more compact XC40. Key things to notice are its sharp ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, upright grille with the dominant Volo logo and sharp crease lines. Models that feature a two-tone colour scheme also look especially pleasing.

That same classy design continues through to the cabin as well, with the XC40 having an especially stylish and modern layout. All versions come with an iPad-like nine-inch portrait touchscreen and clear digital dial system as well. While some might find the largely button-free layout a bit confusing to use at first (especially with the climate control managed by the main touchscreen), you quite easily adjust to it. Elsewhere, the XC40’s interior is also very roomy and ideal for families thanks to a generously-sized boot, plenty of space in the rear seats and a useful amount of cubby holes.

Volvos are generally renowned for their comfort and refinement, and if you want a relaxing car to drive, they don’t come much better at this price than an XC40. Versions fitted with smaller alloy wheels offer a particularly impressive ride, and are the ones to go for if you want maximum comfort. Though rivals might offer a slightly sportier drive, that’s not the intention of this Volvo.

Another reason why the XC40 impresses is because of the broad range of powertrain options. From more conventional petrol and diesel options (which have more recently adopted mild-hybrid technology) to plug-in hybrids and even an EV, few rivals in this class are available with such a broad portfolio of options.

XC40 updates

Here’s a short history of Volvo’s XC40.

Volvo unveiled its XC40 in September 2017, bringing an impressive level of safety kit, a stylish look and well-built interior to the compact segment. First versions reached customers in early 2018.
It would soon go on to become Volvo’s most popular car in the UK, helped by winning awards like European Car of the Year.
Further engines were introduced in 2018, including a three-cylinder T3 petrol, T4 petrol and D3 diesel.
Volvo broadened the range in early 2020 with a new plug-in hybrid T5 option, becoming the first firm to offer a PHEV version across its full range.
An all-electric option is introduced in 2021, packing a hugely powerful 400bhp powertrain, 249-mile range, while also debuting a new Android operating system.

What should I look for when buying a used XC40?

Many versions are fitted with large diamond-cut alloy wheels, which look great but can be expensive if they need refurbishing, so look out for any damage.
The car has suffered from a few software glitches so it’s worth checking if the model’s systems have been updated recently. The dealer should be able to tell you this.
