Expert Opinion

Small SUVs – often called crossovers – have proven very popular in recent years, with buyers increasingly falling for these models' stylish, rugged looks. Many are dressed up to look like a 4x4, but without the thirsty four-wheel-drive systems, meaning they’re still cheap to run. If you want one of the most stylish models in this class, you should take a look at Renault’s funky Captur. Since arriving in 2013, it’s gone on to be this French firm’s best-selling model, though with a generous equipment list and a roomy interior, there’s more to it than just a pretty face.

About Renault Captur

Since its introduction in 2013, the Captur has gone on to be a key player in Renault’s line-up – proving nearly as popular as the Clio and actually outselling traditional best-sellers like the Megane.

It proved to be the right car at the right time for Renault, with a second-generation model following in 2021, introducing a bolder design, higher-quality interior and a pair of hybrid models.

Why buy a used Captur?

If you like a compact car, but reckon a conventional supermini like a Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa is just that bit small, the Renault Captur is a superb option.

Offering more passenger space and a larger boot, the Captur is a good option for small families, while the higher ride also aids accessibility. Things improve further with the second-generation, which gains an even roomier interior, while features like sliding rear seats are a great versatile addition.

The Captur has also consistently impressed when it comes to safety, with both generations being awarded the top five-star rating by Euro NCAP, with the model widely being considered as one of the safest cars in its class.

Then there’s the way the Captur looks, and it’s a model that certainly stands out from the crowd. With a range of bright and vibrant colours available, along with many models coming with a two-tone design with the top half of the car painted in a different colour, it’s certainly an appealing choice where design is concerned. Newer examples also come with full LED headlights, which not only look the part but provide far greater vision at night time, too. What’s more, because Renault didn’t significantly change the look of the Captur in the second generation, even earlier models are ageing particularly well, and still look stylish on the roads today.

Throughout its time it’s been available with a wide range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, though if you fancy something even more efficient, Renault has recently introduced a pair of hybrid powertrains. The first is a plug-in model that can travel for around 30 miles on electricity when the battery is replenished, meanwhile a ‘self-charging’ hybrid model will return similar efficiency to a diesel version.

So if you’re considering a stylish and roomy crossover, yet still with quite a small footprint, the Renault Captur is worth considering.

Captur updates

Here’s a short history of the Renault Captur

  • Renault unveiled the Captur at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show as its first true crossover, with sales beginning a few months later.
  • For 2014 Renault introduced a new range-topping ‘Signature’ trim level, which added part-leather seats, a 7-inch touchscreen and reversing camera.
  • In 2015, a more powerful 108bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine was introduced – badged dCi 110.
  • In 2017 a revised Captur, boasting a bolder design with new LED lighting, a more upmarket interior and new technology features such as hands-free parking and blind spot monitoring.
  • In 2018, Renault simplified the Captur range as part of a new strategy. New trims included Play, Iconic and GT Line.
  • A second-generation Captur was unveiled in 2019, based on a new platform and boasting a raft of new technology and far more upmarket interior. It would arrive in showrooms at the start of 2020.
  • An E-Tech plug-in hybrid would debut as the first electrified Captur in the middle of 2020, with a regular hybrid version following in 2021.

Which used Captur should I buy?

With Renault regularly chopping and changing the Captur line-up, the range has had plenty of rejigs. These are the main features you can expect to find, though.

Renault Captur Play

Keyless entry, LED headlights, LED rear lights, tinted rear windows, electric windows, rear parking sensors, cruise control with a speed limiter, electric parking brake, autonomous emergency braking, automatic lights and wipers, electric auto-folding door mirrors, 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Renault Captur SE Limited

Larger 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, two-tone paint with contrasting roof, privacy glass, traffic sign recognition with overspeed alert.

Renault Captur Iconic

Automatic air conditioning, revised 17-inch alloy wheels, extra tinted rear windows, full C-shape LED front lights.

Renault Captur S Edition

Front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming rear view mirror, configurable driving modes, seven-inch digital dial display.

Renault Captur R.S. Line

Sportier styling with specific F1-inspired front bumper, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, grey skid plates and shark fin antenna. Large 9.3-inch touch screen, frameless rear view mirror, carbon-style dashboard, sports seats, perforated R.S. steering wheel.

What should I look for when buying a used Captur?

  • Many Capturs are urban cars or used for the school run, so look out for any dings and dents, as well as kerbing damage. The diamond-cut alloys fitted to high-spec models can be expensive to repair.
  • Though only affecting a small number of cars, the touchscreen system can fail, so check it’s operating properly before buying an example.
  • Some interior materials on early cars are low quality, so check there is no missing or damaged trim.
  • The fuel filler cap can get stuck, so make sure you can open it on a used example. It won’t be an expensive fix, but can be fiddly.
