Overall rating 4.5/5Known for its clever rear seat solutions and high safety ratings, the Modus suits city drivers who appreciate practical features and reassuring design. Built from 2004 to 2012 based on the Clio, it featured an airy, tall body and clever interior that made good use of its compact footprint. It was the first small car to achieve five stars in Euro NCAP tests. Compared to rivals like the Honda Jazz and Nissan Note, it is not quite as spacious or cheap to run but wins on comfort and interior quality, offering more standard equipment than some luxury cars for the price and a comfortable ride that belies its size.
The Renault Modus boasts a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with airbags, ABS and ISOFIX child seat points included as standard. The seatbelts are fitted with pre-tensioners that kick in prior to impact, working in conjunction with load limiters to help reduce the risk of injury.
The Modus offered a broad choice: 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines, plus efficient 1.5 dCi diesels with various power outputs. Most models return at least 40mpg, while diesel engines are more frugal and suitable for higher mileage. They're also kinder to the environment than you'd think, emitting less than 129g/km CO2, resulting in lower tax costs.
Standard equipment includes electric front windows, remote central locking and curtain airbags, but you have to go up a trim or two before you see a CD player. Many models add air conditioning and split-fold rear seats. Some higher trims feature climate control and leather seats, so check individual cars for kit.
Economy varies by engine – small petrols average around 42mpg, while the 1.5 dCi diesel can reach 62.9mpg combined. The Modus is generally economical for its class, especially if regularly used around town, though the 1.2 will struggle to perform if it's put under heavy load.
Look out for signs of heavy family use, worn seat fabrics and ensure all seat adjustment mechanisms work as intended. There were two recalls on the Modus not long after launch, so confirm any remedial work was carried out. For added peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection service before you sign on the line.
The Modus scores well for comfort and safety, but reliability is mixed – diesel engines are strong, but electrics and interior trim can be weak spots. Regular maintenance is essential, and many owners enjoy thousands of trouble-free miles with sensible upkeep.
