The Renault Captur was awarded the maximum five-star rating when it was tested by Euro NCAP in 2013. It was one of the safest cars tested that year, in fact, with adult and child occupant safety scores of 88 and 79 per cent respectively being impressive. It has a range of airbags, and you’ll find ISOFIX child seat mounting points on both the two outer seats at the rear and on the front passenger seat - there’s an easy-to-use airbag cut-off switch if you need to use these latter options.

Engine choices on the Captur start with a 0.9-litre petrol which is ideal for urban drivers. From there, a 1.2-litre petrol took over - a 1.3-litre petrol replaced this on later cars - and you’re able to get both manual and automatic gearbox Captur models. In terms of diesel, there’s a 1.5-litre unit with either 89bhp or 109bhp.

All versions of the Captur benefit from air conditioning as standard alongside automatic headlights, Bluetooth connectivity and automatic wipers. You’ll need to look out for ‘Dynamique Nav’ cars to get a central touchscreen and satellite navigation. However, all versions do come well equipped as standard.

It’s the diesel-powered Captur models which are the most fuel-efficient, delivering up to 78.5mpg according to the older NEDC tests. The petrol models are still good in this regard, however, with the 0.9-litre engine able to return 55.4mpg. You’ll find the larger 1.2-litre will still manage around 51mpg combined, too.

Earlier models of the Captur were launched with some slightly cheap materials inside, so we’d be checking the interior to make sure that it hasn’t been scratched or damaged during use. There have been some noted issues with the navigation on models that have it fitted, so make sure this is working as it should, too.
