Overall rating 4/5The Renault Koleos is a larger SUV designed to bring comfort, presence, and practicality to daily life. It is a five-seater with generous interior space, well-suited to families or those who appreciate upright seating and good visibility. Introduced in 2008, early models focused on comfort but were less refined than rivals. The second generation launched in 2017 shares much with the Nissan X-Trail but retains distinctive Renault styling. It competes with models like the Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Mazda CX-5, offering strong value and plenty of standard equipment. Today's Koleos features plush materials, a practical cabin, an easy-to-use infotainment system with sat-nav, and advanced safety technology including lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and multiple airbags.
The Koleos comes with stability control, multiple airbags and ISOFIX, plus a suite of available safety assists such as lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking. Higher trims add blind spot monitoring and all-round cameras, helping you stay alert and protected wherever you drive.
Most used Koleos models in the UK are diesel-powered. The second generation (from 2017) offers a 1.6 dCi 130 (front-wheel drive) and a 2.0 dCi 175 (with four-wheel drive available). Earlier models, built from 2008, carry different power ratings but primarily use diesel engines.
Standard features include a touch-screen infotainment system with TomTom sat-nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims have a larger display and upgraded sound system. All models benefit from a digital driver’s display and climate control.
For 2017-on models, the 1.6 dCi averages up to around 57mpg, while the 2.0 dCi manages up to 50mpg according to official figures. Real-world fuel economy can be lower, especially in town or when the vehicle is heavily loaded. Earlier models achieve mid-30s to low-40s mpg depending on engine and specification.
Check for regular servicing and inspect the condition of the clutch and gearbox, which can be weak points. Ensure all electronic features, including the infotainment system, work correctly. For additional reassurance, consider a full assessment such as The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Renault’s diesel engines are generally reasonably reliable, and feedback on the Koleos suggests good durability. However, some reports mention electrical niggles and minor trim issues. Adhering to recommended service schedules is the best way to maintain dependable performance.
