Expert Opinion

Designed by the style-obsessed engineers at BMW, the MINI Hatch is packed with as much panache as we’ve come to expect since the German manufacturers introduced the first generation in 2000. The 2014 model houses a new super-efficient Twin-Power Turbo engine that offers next-level responsiveness across the rev range, and the hugely-enjoyable go-kart handling puts the manoeuvrability of more expensive machines to shame. In terms of cost, the MINI is marginally cheaper on the whole compared to rival hatchbacks like the Audi A1, but loses out against another 3-door competitor, the Citroen DS3. This extra spend however is compensated by comparatively low running costs, particularly with the 1.6-litre diesel model, making it an ideal companion for long journeys and short jaunts alike, and an especially good buy on the used market.

About MINI Hatch

The Mini Hatch has spent more than 50 years reigning as one of the world's most quintessential compact cars. It's as relevant today as it was when it launched back in 1959.

In its pre-BMW days, the Mini maintained a reputation for efficiency, with low-running costs and great fuel economy. Now, not only has BMW managed to improve on that efficiency, thanks to a new range of turbocharged engines, but they've also taken the iconic Mini design to a whole new level of popularity.

Why buy a used Hatch?

Mini has been a mainstay in the small-car market since the 60s and after BMW took over in 2000 it's only grown in popularity with a modern design that compliments its traditional retro styling. And now, with a brand new series of high-efficiency engines, the Mini also retains its long-standing reputation for fuel economy and low running costs.

As ever, the Mini's instantly recognisable aesthetics are what make the Hatch such a popular compact. It's for this reason we can forgive BMW for designing the latest model to look practically identical to the previous two – at least, at first glance anyway. A closer inspection reveals a more rounded body, longer front end, a slightly altered grill with chrome finishes, and larger lights in the front and rear. Numerous customisation options are available, which include eye-catching bonnet stripes and black 17-inch alloys.

In terms of the interior design, Mini has ventured a little further from the traditional as it now includes several new design flourishes. The retro-style dashboard still remains, but now features a central and fairly large circular display that flashes green when the start-stop mechanism operates. Again with the optional extras, the Chili Pack adds climate control, multifunction steering wheel, ambient lighting and front sport seats that make the most of the relatively spacious cabin. In the back, however, legroom is slightly lacking, as is boot space. In regards to that, it's probably worth paying a little extra for the adjustable boot floor.

Responsive handling has always been Mini's MO and the Hatch, with its agile go-kart steering and amped-up suspension, definitely delivers on drivability. At moderate speeds cornering is fluid, particularly in the Cooper model, and body control is strong even with the additional length. The comfortable driving position, good visibility, easy mid-range acceleration and composed suspension all make for a safer and more stable drive than older models offered.

Mini presents three and four-cylinder engine models for both diesel and petrol. The acceleration offered by the Mini One's 1.2 turbo is punchier than you might expect, but the Cooper's larger 1.5-litre V3 goes one further. It's the same lightweight machinery used in BMW's i8 supercar, which makes it more than nippy around bends. Where the Mini really wins out however is in efficiency – so much so that two out of the three diesel models are exempt from road tax. The 1.5 V3 petrol engine returns a generous 62.7mpg at only 105g/km CO2, but the diesel models are a cut above in terms of fuel economy. The One D offers 80mpg while its bigger brother, the Cooper D gives 80.7mpg.

Hatch updates

MINI Hatch

The Mini Hatch has been an icon of the roads right since it was first released, in 1959.

Here's a brief history of the Mini Hatch dating back to when BMC launched the original iconic model in 1959.

  • The Mark I Mini was released by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1959 who continued to produce it until 1967.
  • Slow initial sales gradually improved as the performance versions, the Mini Cooper and Cooper S, were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, '65 and '67.
  • The Mark I had three major updates after 1967, including the Mark II, the Clubman and the Mark III.
  • In 1966, BMC became British Motor Holdings which merged with Leyland Motors in 1968 to form British Leyland.
  • Mini became its own marque in 1969 but by the 80s British Leyland dissolved and Mini was eventually bought by BMW in 1994.
  • In 1998 BMW set out on creating a production-model Mini and the new generation Hatch/Hardtop went on sale in 2001, seeing huge success.
  • In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, after the Ford Model T.
  • Between 2001 and 2006 four hatchback models were produced, being the Mini One, Mini One D, Mini Cooper and the Mini Cooper S.
  • 2006 saw BMW release a second generation of the Mini Hardtop with stylistic and engineering alterations that made it of more cost-effective and fuel efficient.
  • In 2011, BMW announced that it would be investing a further £500 million in the UK and extending the Mini range with the release of two new two-door sports crossover models – a coupe and a roadster.
  • BMW unveiled the third and most recent generation Mini in November 2013, which is longer, wider and taller than the previous model.

What should I look for when buying a used Hatch?

What to look for in a MINI Hatch
  • The windscreen is very susceptible to chips and cracks, so check it carefully.
  • The exhaust is stainless steel and should last forever, so it just needs to be examined for signs of damage from grounding.
  • Examine the wheels for signs of kerbing and peeling lacquer.
  • Grab hold of the front bumper and give it a firm shake to ensure it is still securely attached. They are quite low and can be easily damaged by speed bumps and kerbs.
  • On the test drive, listen carefully for unusual noises. If a Cooper or Cooper S has a slight rattle at the top end, it could either mean the hydraulic tappets are on their way out or that the timing chain needs tensioning.
  • Take a look beneath the bonnet for signs of a leak from either the oil filter housing or the sump. Either would likely mean the engine has run out of oil at some point and caused costly damage.
  • There are reports of the six-speed manual gearbox failing and needing to be replaced, along with concerns about the clutch.
  • The stop-start system has also been known to malfunction and stall the car at junctions. In some cases it has stopped working altogether, leaving an error message on the dash which can only be rectified by the dealer.
  • Some owners have complained of the dashboard rattling and creaking, which hasn't always been sorted after a replacement.
  • The speakers can also rattle and distort, and in some cases can fail altogether and need replacing.
