Overall rating 5/5The Mini Cooper D combines classic British character with everyday practicality and low running costs. Known for its sharp handling and eye-catching design, it offers an engaging drive on winding roads while remaining economical on longer journeys. The third generation (F56) was produced from 2014 to 2023 with a major facelift in 2018, while earlier R56 models date from 2007 to 2014. Diesel Coopers balance fun with efficiency and stand out against rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Audi A1 for their spirited drive and quality cabin. The interior is well-built, especially in higher trims, offering 3 or 5-door options and plenty of personalisation, though boot and rear seat space is limited.
The Mini Cooper D features six airbags, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, and ISOFIX child seat points as standard. Some models include autonomous emergency braking and parking sensors as optional. It scored four out of five stars in Euro NCAP testing, reflecting solid overall safety, though some rivals offer more standard driver aids.
The third-generation Mini Cooper D (2014–2020) is powered by a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine delivering 114bhp. Earlier models used a 1.6-litre diesel. Both engines are paired with six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. After 2019, Mini phased out diesel engines, so newer models are petrol or electric only.
All Cooper Ds come with DAB radio, Bluetooth, and a colour display. Higher trims or optional packs (Chili or Navigation packs) add sat-nav, parking sensors, climate control, and larger infotainment screens. Apple CarPlay became more common after 2018.
The Mini Cooper D is impressively efficient, with official NEDC figures for the 1.5 diesel up to 72mpg. Real-world economy typically falls in the high 50s to low 60s mpg depending on driving style. CO2 emissions are low, benefiting road tax especially on pre-2017 models.
Ensure there is a full service history and that any recalls or updates are completed. Diesel models are best suited for regular long runs to avoid diesel particulate filter (DPF) issues from short journeys. Check clutch operation and infotainment functionality. For extra assurance, consider a vehicle inspection from The AA.
The Mini Cooper D generally has a good reliability record, especially the 1.5 diesel engine from 2014 onwards. Some owners have reported clutch and infotainment system issues. As with any premium small car, proper servicing is key to reliable ownership.
