The third generation (F56) was produced from 2014 to 2023 with a major facelift in 2018, while earlier R56 models date from 2007 to 2014. The interior is well-built, especially in higher trims, offering 3 or 5-door options and plenty of personalisation, though boot and rear seat space is limited.

The third-generation Mini Cooper D (2014–2020) is powered by a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine delivering 114bhp. Earlier models used a 1.6-litre diesel.
