Overall rating 4/5Built between 2012 and 2015, the Mini Roadster aimed to offer all the charm and character of a Mini – but with added wind-in-your-hair thrills. It takes inspiration from classic British roadsters but adds the modern Mini’s solid engineering and style. The way the Roadster darts around corners is bound to put a grin on your face, and the roof folding back in seconds will see the sunlight on your skin and wind in your hair. Compared to rivals like the Mazda MX-5 or Audi TT Roadster, the Mini stands out for its lively engines and unique interior, though its ride is firmer than most. You won’t find back seats here, but the 240-litre boot is surprisingly roomy – there's plenty of space for a weekend bag or a spontaneous road trip. Now only available used, every model provides a spirited drive and distinct personality.
The Mini Roadster features standard driver, passenger, side and head airbags, plus stability and traction control for all models. A strengthened windscreen frame and roll-over bars support safety even with the roof down. While Euro NCAP has not crash-tested this specific variant, most Minis of the era hold strong safety reputations.
Every Mini Roadster comes with lively engines, depending on model. Options include the 1.6-litre petrol (in Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works versions) and a 2.0-litre diesel (Cooper SD). Power ranges from 122bhp to 211bhp. All come with either a six-speed manual or optional automatic gearbox.
All Mini Roadsters include air conditioning, parking sensors and a DAB radio with Bluetooth as standard. Upper trims may have sat nav, partial leather, cruise control and other extras. The dashboard design is playful and distinctive, but controls are sometimes oddly placed, so something to keep in mind.
Fuel economy varies by engine. The diesel Cooper SD is the most efficient, capable of around 62.8mpg combined. The standard 1.6 petrol manages up to 49.6mpg, while the quicker Cooper S and JCW versions deliver slightly lower figures, especially if fitted with an automatic gearbox.
Check roof operation, as the semi-automatic hood should move smoothly. Inspect for signs of leaks and test the air conditioning, electrics and infotainment. Firm suspension can mean knocks or rattles. A full service history is important. For extra peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Mini Roadster is generally solid and dependable, borrowing its parts from tried-and-tested Mini models. Most owners don't encounter too many problems, but as with any used sports car, a well-kept service history is your best friend. BMW’s involvement adds to its reputation for long-term durability, though it’s wise to budget for thorough servicing on any used sports convertible.
