Overall rating 5/5With its agile handling, premium-feeling cabin and iconic design, the One D stands out in the world of small, practical cars. The Mini One D mixes everyday usability with a sense of fun, featuring classic British styling and sharp handling. Since the BMW-era relaunch in 2001, the third-generation Mini Hatch (2014–2023) includes the One D as an ultra-frugal diesel option designed to compete with the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, and Audi A1. Recent models have a 1.5-litre diesel engine offering good efficiency without compromising driving enjoyment, available in both three- and five-door versions, with a well-equipped interior reflecting BMW’s build quality and optional extras.
Later models often come with features like multiple airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring as standard. Optional packs may add features like automatic emergency braking and parking sensors on higher specs. The Mini hatchback received a four-star Euro NCAP rating, narrowly missing out on the full five stars.
The One D is fitted with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine in third-generation Minis from 2014 onwards. Earlier versions had a different 1.6-litre diesel unit, but the 1.5-litre is more common and offers strong fuel efficiency alongside decent performance for a small car.
Standard kit in the Mini One D usually includes air con, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher-spec models or those with option packs may offer bigger screens, sat nav, rear parking sensors or even an upgraded sound system, especially from the 2018 facelift onwards.
The Mini One D is especially popular due to its low fuel costs. Depending on the exact model and year, you'll get an official combined economy of 72–83mpg for the 1.5-litre diesel, according to NEDC figures. Real-world numbers may be a bit lower, but you can still expect excellent efficiency, especially for mixed driving.
Check for a full service history, particularly regular oil changes and DPF (diesel particulate filter) health on diesel models. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, and make sure all the electronics work as they should. For extra confidence, consider booking with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Generally, Minis have a solid reputation for reliability, though higher-mileage diesels need careful servicing, especially for the DPF and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) systems. Build quality is typically strong and most electrical faults are minor, with many owners praising the Mini for everyday dependability.
