Overall rating 4/5It stands out for its agile handling and refined, characterful interior. So, if you want to have fun behind the wheel, without compromising on quality, this might be the ideal car for you. The Mini Cooper S is designed for people who want energy and style in a compact, satisfying package. Since BMW relaunched the Mini brand in 2001, the Cooper S has been the sportier option, with extra power and sharper handling while retaining everything drivers love about the regular Mini. It has seen several updates, becoming roomier, safer and more advanced over time. Compared to rivals like the Fiesta ST and Polo GTI, it delivers a mix of fun driving, refinement and premium allure. Today's model features a strong turbo-petrol engine, high-quality trim, and a wide range of tech to suit modern needs.
Mini Cooper S models include standard driver aids such as Electronic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, multiple airbags (typically six), TPMS and ISOFIX anchor points. From the 2014 generation onward, advanced options like Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), parking sensors and Adaptive Cruise Control became available, often bundled in safety or comfort packages. Newer Minis also tend to perform well in Euro NCAP assessments, offering strong occupant protection.
Second-generation (2007–2014) Cooper S models use a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with around 175bhp, while post-2014 cars come with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol producing up to 192bhp. You can find variants with both manual and automatic gearboxes, and all offer lively performance with a distinctive Mini exhaust note.
Equipment varies, but most Cooper S models offer Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB ports and air conditioning as standard. From the 2014 generation onward, Minis offer touchscreen infotainment systems, Apple CarPlay (on later models), navigation and upgraded audio. Look out for cars with the popular Chili, Tech or Comfort Packs for extra features like heated seats, parking sensors or larger screens.
The second-generation Cooper S (1.6L) manages around 40-41mpg on a combined cycle under ideal conditions. The third-generation (2.0L) is comparable, achieving 43-49mpg depending on spec and how fast you drive. Expect insurance groups to range between 18 and 36, varying with trim, age and power level.
Look for a full service history, as regular oil changes are key for engine health. Listen for suspension knocks and check for even tyre wear – larger wheels can contribute to wear and firmer ride comfort. You should also test cabin electrics thoroughly. For extra reassurance, book a The AA Vehicle Inspection before buying.
Most Mini Cooper S models are well-built, especially after 2014, but earlier cars can develop issues such as timing chain noise or turbo problems if poorly maintained. Later models score well in owner satisfaction and reliability surveys. A history of regular, manufacturer-approved servicing is a positive indicator of a well-cared-for car.
