Expert Opinion

Those of a certain vintage might recall the Corolla as a seriously reliable saloon that dates back to the 1960s, but more recently this Toyota has evolved into a striking-looking family car. Widely known as being one of the most popular cars globally, the latest model is smarter, better to drive and also more efficient than ever before, with the latter attribute being aided by the model’s predominantly hybrid powertrains. Built in the UK and available as a hatchback, saloon and estate, it’s a seriously good alternative to a Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra.

About Toyota Corolla

Few cars have lasted for quite so many iterations as the Toyota Corolla, which first arrived all the way back in 1966, and is still going strong a remarkable 12 generations later, with no signs of sales slowing.

Sold as the Corolla for the majority of the time, for two generations between 2006 and 2018 Toyota changed the name to the Auris, before reverting back to the better-known Corolla again in more recent years. With its mix of affordability, reliability and style, it’s no surprise this model continues to prove such a hit.

Why buy a used Corolla?

Toyotas haven’t always been known for their style, but all that changed on the latest Corolla, which received a far more aggressive-looking and bolder design than the Auris that came before it. Looking especially striking in higher-spec versions, it gets sharp LED headlights, a wide front grille and a host of sportier cues that truly make it stand out in this sector – no easy feat considering the competition.

This latest model – though originally launching with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that has since been discontinued in the UK – is also renowned for its efficiency, thanks to its hybrid powertrains. There’s the option of a 120bhp 1.8-litre petrol-electric setup or a more powerful 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol-electric option, with both delivering a smooth and swift drive, while at the same time efficiency. Both are quite capable of more than 50mpg in everyday driving, while CO2 emissions as low as 102g/km are particularly impressive.

You also have far more choice than you do with many rivals. Though it’s not uncommon for cars in this class to be sold as a hatchback and an estate, the Corolla gets the option of a third body style – a Saloon. Though the least popular of the trio, it adds another dimension to this Toyota that only expands its appeal.

You also get a huge amount of car for your money, with all Corolla versions receiving a very generous list of equipment that far exceeds many rivals. Highlights include heated front AND rear seats, a reversing camera and an 8-inch touchscreen to name but a few features.

As with all Toyota models, there’s a really solid and sturdy feel to the Corolla. Though it perhaps doesn’t feel quite so ‘premium’ as others in this class, it’s built to last, with everything having a refreshingly solid feel. There are no flimsy plastics here, while it’s also a very reliable choice as well as the firm’s hybrid models are renowned for their dependability.

Corolla updates

With Corolla production spanning more than 50 years, here’s a short history of the model, dating back to its launch in 1966.

  • Toyota first introduced the Corolla in 1966, with a second version arriving in 1970 and the third in 1974. Less than a decade after its original launch, it became the World’s best-selling car.
  • A squarer-styled fourth generation was introduced in 1979.
  • A more contemporary-looking fifth car arrived in 1983, followed by a sportier-looking sixth version in 1987.
  • In 1991, the seventh Corolla migrated to becoming a slightly larger car, a path the eight generation would follow in 1995.
  • By 2000, the ninth version arrived, offering a far more modern look than the cars before it.
  • In 2006 for the tenth generation Toyota in Europe elected to call it the Auris, and the same applied in 2012 too.
  • By 2018 the Corolla nameplate was revived again for the 12th car. It was sleeker and better looking than ever.

What should I look for when buying a used Corolla?

  • Toyotas are widely considered to be some of the most reliable cars on the roads, and the Corolla is no exception.
  • Versions come with a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty as standard. If serviced at a Toyota main dealer, the warranty can extend up to 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes soonest)
  • For a small number of cars, there’s the possibility the emergency calling system isn’t activated, though a Toyota garage wil remedy this for free.
