AA Cars review

The Toyota Corolla is a well-rounded, dependable and stylish compact car that blends efficiency, comfort, and advanced safety. Its hybrid options make it one of the most economical choices in its class, and the variety of body styles means there’s a Corolla for nearly every need. It’s also much better to drive than you might imagine.

How much does it cost?

Prices for a brand-new Toyota Corolla start from £29,295 for the entry-level Icon hatchback, or £30,0645 for the Touring Sports, with the most expensive models finishing just shy of £36,000 meaning that all are exempt from the Expensive Car Supplement where VED/road tax is concerned. All are well equipped.

On the used market, prices for this generation start at around £10,000 on AA Cars for the oldest models, with a wide spread of smart examples with sensible mileages between £15,000 and £20,000. All enjoy strong residual values thanks to Toyota’s reputation for reliability.

Engine and performance

Overview

The current Corolla range is powered by petrol-electric hybrid engines, with a 1.8-litre and a more powerful 2.0-litre hybrid available. The 1.8 Hybrid produces 140bhp and 142Nm of torque, achieving 0-62 mph in 9.2 seconds. The 2.0 Hybrid ups the output to 196bhp and 190Nm, with a brisk 0-62 mph time of 7.9 seconds. Both engines feature Toyota’s self-charging hybrid system, enabling limited electric-only running at low speeds and in urban conditions.

Earlier models were also offered with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 116bhp and 185Nm, but this has largely been phased out in favour of hybrids. All Corollas feature automatic (CVT) transmission, and the hybrids deliver smooth, quiet operation with instant response in city driving.

Out on the road

The Corolla’s TNGA platform is used globally on all of the brand’s compact models, and it delivers a composed, comfortable ride with impressive refinement. Handling is agile and responsive, with well-weighted steering that inspires confidence – it’s one of the best Toyotas to drive in a generation.

The hybrid system ensures near-silent running at low speeds, often with next to no fuel use, making the Corolla an ideal car if you do lots of urban journeys.

Visibility is good, and standard-fit parking sensors and a reversing camera make manoeuvring straightforward, even in tighter spaces.

Ride and handling

Toyota has prioritised comfort and stability in the Corolla’s suspension setup, with independent rear suspension across the range. The ride is supple and composed, absorbing bumps effectively, and although it’s not as sharp as some rivals, the body control is excellent.

We’re particularly fond of the Touring Sports, which is one of only a handful of compact estate cars on the market and is especially popular with the taxi and private hire industries as a result. It’s an extremely comfortable car and the additional length over the hatchback model gives it an even more impressive ride.

If you want a little bit more driver involvement then the GR Sport trim is worth seeking out – it offers a slightly firmer, sportier set-up, but all models are competent and enjoyable to drive. Indeed, if you’re not massively fussed about super-sharp dynamics, then the Corolla is a thoroughly likeable car with charms that grow on you over time. It’s sensible, but that doesn’t mean it’s dull.

Interior and features

Interiors

While not overly stylish the Corolla offers a modern, clean, high-quality cabin with soft-touch materials, ambient lighting, and comfortable seating.

The dashboard features a digital instrument display and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is functional but not as modern as that found in some rivals by virtue of it being one of the older models in its class.

All body styles offer plenty of legroom and headroom for five passengers, with supportive seats and practical storage throughout.

Isofix child seat mounts are fitted to the outer rear seats, and rear legroom is generous.

Boot space and practicality

The hatchback offers 361 litres of boot space which is around average for the sector, but it expands significantly with the rear seats folded, to 1,052 litres.

The estate (Touring Sports) variant provides up to 598 litres, or a massive 1,591 litres if you drop the seats.

The boot features a low loading lip for easy access, and hybrid models maintain good practicality despite having to accommodate the battery under the boot floor. In-cabin storage includes large door pockets, cupholders, and a flexible centre console.

Features

Standard equipment on all models includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, touchscreen navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, and a full suite of driver assistance systems.

Higher trims add extras such as a panoramic sunroof, JBL premium audio, adaptive LED headlights, and advanced safety features. Toyota’s infotainment system receives over-the-air updates but it’s not as comprehensive as some rival set-ups.

Trim and colour options

The Corolla range includes Icon, Design, GR Sport, and Excel trims, each offering distinct styling and equipment packages. The entry-level Icon features alloy wheels, LED headlights, and comprehensive safety features.

Design models add a more upmarket upholstery style and further technology, with more driver assistance aids, while the GR Sport brings a sportier exterior and interior and larger alloy wheels.

The Excel is the upmarket model and offers luxury touches such as leather seats and a premium JBL audio system.

Colour choices include classic Pure White, Eclipse Black and Silver Metallic, as well as vibrant Scarlet Flare and Denim Blue. Toyota also offers a range of dealer accessories for those seeking a more personalised finish.

Safety and reliability

The latest Toyota Corolla achieved a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with scores of 95% for adult occupant protection, 84% for child occupant protection, 86% for vulnerable road user protection, and 77% for safety assist systems.

Standard safety features include multiple airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and road sign recognition. Toyota’s reputation for reliability is bolstered by strong owner reviews, and hybrid battery components are covered for up to 10 years with regular servicing.

MPG, emissions and tax

The 1.8 Hybrid achieves official WLTP fuel economy figures of 60-64 mpg, while the 2.0 Hybrid returns between 54-57 mpg, depending on specification and wheel size.

Depending on how you use the car, though, this can be increased, with as much as 100mpg possible in round-town driving. There’s a handy function on the touchscreen where you can monitor your driving and maximise time it runs on electricity, which can be surprisingly good fun to test how efficient you are behind the wheel.

Emissions are low, with CO2 ratings from 83 g/km for the hybrid models, ensuring low road tax and benefit-in-kind rates for company car users.

Annual road is £195 at current rates (2025) and insurance groups are quite low, ranging from 15 to 22. Servicing intervals are every 12 months or 10,000 miles. Toyota’s warranty covers three years/60,000 miles, with up to 10 years’ cover available, provided annual servicing is maintained.
