Expert Opinion

A car that will go down in the history books as one of the most significant models of the 21st century, the Nissan Leaf brought electric motoring to the masses – proving you didn’t need a Tesla to make the switch to an EV. Though you might not love the way the Leaf looks, it’s hard to ignore its significance. It’s also been a huge success for British manufacturing, with nearly 200,000 produced since its introduction in 2010. While first-generation models are a hugely affordable way into used EV ownership, where possible you should take a look at the newer car, which brought a far longer range and more in the way of equipment.

About Nissan Leaf

The first true affordable mass-market EV, the Nissan Leaf was an early adopter in the world of electric cars, proving that these models didn’t have to cost a fortune to buy, and that they could be usable on a daily basis. Though early versions were hampered by quite a small range of 80 miles, a later model with a larger 30kWh battery could crack the 100-mile barrier.

Real progress came in 2018, though, and the arrival of a second-generation, which brought with it vast advancements in technology and ease of driving, while a larger 40kWh battery (as standard) helped to unlock an electric range of more than 160 miles. A year later, an E+ model reached showrooms with a big 62kWh battery offering a range of up to 235 miles.

Why buy a used Leaf?

If you‘re looking for a low-price used EV, they really don’t come much more affordable than a Nissan Leaf. As it was one of the earliest electric cars, prices are now very low, with used examples now available from as little as £4,500 or £6,000 for a low-mileage example. There really aren’t many cheaper ways to get behind the wheel of an electric car, and when you consider the low running costs (the Leaf is exempt from road tax and any emissions-based road charges), it’s not hard to see the appeal. As the Leaf was the best-selling electric car for many years, there’s also a huge choice available on the used market.

It’s also far from being an impractical choice, with both generations offering a roomy interior and a decent-sized boot – more so than plenty of petrol and diesel models of the same size. A lot of this comes from the fact the Leaf was always designed to be an EV, rather than a manufacturer making an electric car from a conventional model, as is the case with many rivals, including the Volkswagen e-Golf.

With the Leaf being the first EV for many that bought them, it’s also a great introduction to electric motoring, with this Nissan’s comfortable, quiet and relaxed driving experience offering plenty of appeal, whether that be around town or on longer trips.

Though the first-generation’s range was always a bit disappointing, it’ll still be plenty for many drivers, especially those that can charge at home. How often do you drive more than 80 miles per day, after all? If range is important, though, things have really improved on the latest car. Even the regular 40kWh battery version can manage up to a claimed 168 miles on a single charge, but if you opt for the long-range E+ model, that number increases to 235 miles.

With generous levels of standard equipment and the feeling you’re getting plenty for your money – regardless of how new or old your Leaf is – this Nissan is more than capable of holding its own, even next to more modern rivals.

Leaf updates

Here’s a short history of the Nissan Leaf, dating back to 2010 when the model was first launched.
  • Nissan revealed the Leaf in August 2009, representing the world’s first electric car designed with affordability and everyday usability in mind.
  • The announcement that the Leaf would be produced in Sunderland came in March 2010, representing an important milestone for future UK automotive manufacturing.
  • First UK deliveries of the Leaf would arrive in March 2011, with the model also being awarded European Car of the Year at a similar time.
  • Nissan revised the Leaf in 2013, making it roomier, quicker to charge and able to travel slightly longer than before.
  • Nissan celebrates production of its 100,000th Leaf – a big milestone when EVs were still in their infancy.
  • For 2015, Nissan introduced a 30kWh battery for the Leaf, increasing the model’s range by 25 per cent.
  • In September 2017, Nissan revealed the second-generation Leaf, boasting a longer range, a roomier interior and more modern styling. First deliveries arrived in February 2018.
  • An ‘E+’ model was shown in January 2019, featuring a larger 62kWh battery. Originally intended as a special edition, it would enter mainstream production later that year.
  • In 2021, A ‘Leaf10’ special edition was introduced to mark a decade of this EV

What should I look for when buying a used Leaf?

  • First generation Nissan Leaf could be bought with a battery leasing scheme, which helped to lower the price and would replace the battery if any faults occurred (which was rare). Used examples without an ‘owned’ battery are still subject to this battery lease fee, which is often around £70 per month, depending on mileage.
  • Check charging cables are in the car, as they can cost hundreds of pounds to replace.
  • Infotainment system on earlier cars relies on an SD card that’s tailored to the car. If it’s missing the screen won’t work properly and is expensive to sort.
  • Generally a very reliable choice; it’s not uncommon to see Leaf models with well in excess of 100,000 miles on the clock.
  • Make sure the battery can charge fully and check the range. While an EV’s battery does degrade over time, it’s not usually a significant problem.
