Overall rating 4/5This compact hatchback is best known for its low running costs and simple, practical design. The Nissan Pixo (2009-2013) was designed with city life in mind – nimble, efficient and very affordable to run. Built in partnership with Suzuki and sharing most of its parts with the Suzuki Alto, the Pixo offers Nissan badging and a budget-friendly route into ownership. Its strengths are low insurance, strong fuel economy from its 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and easy-to-drive performance. Compared with rivals like the Toyota Aygo and Kia Picanto, the Pixo is cheaper to buy and run. Inside, though, it feels more basic and offers less space. Equipment is sparse, but if you're looking for low running costs and fuss-free motoring, it's still a cost-effective choice today.
Standard safety equipment in the Nissan Pixo includes dual front airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Some trim levels offer side airbags. It offers a basic but reassuring level of protection for a compact city car.
All Nissan Pixos come with a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. It delivers 67 bhp and is paired with either a five-speed manual or optional automatic gearbox, depending on the version. The engine is designed for efficiency and ease of use in urban traffic.
Entry-level models are very simple, with a CD/radio and 12V socket. Higher trims added air conditioning, electric front windows and central locking, but tech was limited even when new. Features like Bluetooth and DAB radio were not available from the factory.
Official figures claim up to 64mpg (NEDC), with most owners seeing around 50-55mpg in everyday use. That makes the Pixo one of the more economical city cars of its time.
Look out for signs of wear in the cabin, check the service history for regular maintenance and listen for any unusual noises from the engine or suspension. Electrical equipment on older cars can occasionally be temperamental. For extra peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Yes, overall reliability is strong. The Pixo uses proven engineering and has a reputation for dependable running if correctly maintained. Occasional niggles include minor interior issues or battery wear, but serious faults are very rare for this model.
