Overall rating 4/5Little bigger than a supermini, the Nissan Note packs in a surprising amount of space into its small frame, and along with good running costs and a smooth, mature drive, it is no surprise that it remains popular as a solid family car.

Overall rating 4/5This spacious and responsive mini-MPV has been on sale in Europe since 2006 and in two generations, the first between 2006 and 2012 and the second between July 2012 and the current day. Those looking to support the domestic manufacturing base should consider its UK production credentials. Even at its most standard, the original Note has an impressive array of trim, the 'S' offers electric windows and door mirrors, CD, remote locking, alloys and front fogs and Flexi-Board boot system. Upgrade to the SE and you'll get eye-catching 15" alloys and AC. Spend a little more and the SVE adds the comfort of climate control, privacy of tinted rear windows, 16" alloys and ESP. Alongside that responsive steering, there's low emissions and competitive fuel economy across all three engines -1.4 and 1.6 petrol, and 1.5 diesel. All three are on offer with five speed manual or four speed auto gearboxes. The second generation Note was launched very recently and arrives with two equally cost-effective engine types, both 1.2, and three new trims Visia, Acenta and Tekna.
