Overall rating 4.5/5This advanced coupe stands out for its high-tech four-wheel drive and turbocharged V6 engine, which makes it a practical yet thrilling choice for UK drivers. Launched in 2007, the R35 GT-R replaced the Skyline GT-R models with radical changes in performance and technology. It offers lightning acceleration, confident handling in all conditions, and competes directly with rivals like the Porsche 911, Audi R8, and Jaguar F-Type. It also provides unique all-weather assurance and a roomy, practical boot, making it suitable for both local cruising and longer trips. Inside, it features leather seats, a feature-packed infotainment system, and driving dynamics that deliver an engaging experience, with later versions including advanced Recaro seats and a high-performance Nismo variant. It's practical enough for daily use but retains a strong sense of occasion.
While the Nissan GT-R hasn’t been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, it covers the basics well. Standard safety tech includes anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control. However, unlike some newer competitors, it lacks many modern driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking or lane assist – something to keep in mind if safety assistance is a top priority.
Every R35 Nissan GT-R features a hand-built 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Power outputs have ranged from 480hp in early cars up to 600hp in the Nismo editions, with regular updates boosting performance through the years. All models use a dual-clutch, six-speed, automatic gearbox with advanced four-wheel drive.
GT-Rs from recent years have an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, sat nav, eleven-speaker Bose audio and DAB radio. You’ll also find heated leather seats and keyless entry as standard. However, its operating system feels a bit behind the times, as it doesn't offer smartphone mirroring such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Officially, the Nissan GT-R returns around 23mpg under WLTP testing, but real-world figures may be lower, especially with enthusiastic driving. It’s a car built for performance rather than efficiency, so factor in higher running costs for both fuel and maintenance compared to ordinary coupes.
Pay close attention to a GT-R’s service history—especially regular gearbox and four-wheel drive maintenance. Cosmetic inspection of alloy wheels and tyres is wise due to their cost. Ensure all electronics and infotainment work as they should. For peace of mind, The AA Vehicle Inspection service can help spot hidden issues.
The GT-R’s robust engineering means most are mechanically sound, but running costs can be high due to complex systems and the stresses of high performance. Nissan is generally ranked below average for reliability, so buying from a well-documented history and planning for timely servicing is particularly important with this high-performance model.
