Overall rating 4/5While its unique looks are what this small MPV is known for, it also packs space into a compact package – great for city driving and tight parking. Nissan designed the Cube to be both distinctive and practical – and they largely succeeded. First launched in Japan, the Cube arrived in the UK in 2009 and was only officially sold new here until 2011, making used models a rare sight. Built on trusted Nissan engineering, this mini MPV is an eye-catching alternative to more mainstream hatchbacks like the Kia Soul or the Toyota Urban Cruiser. Inside, the Cube offers generous headroom and flexible seating, all while remaining easy to drive. Its bold exterior – be prepared to get lots of looks from bystanders – and clever use of space set it apart from its rivals. The Cube is a car for drivers who insist on standing out from the crowd.
The Nissan Cube is safe as well as striking. All models have electronic stability control, six airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts. It scored four stars in Euro NCAP tests, and rear visibility is good, though the rear pillars do leave some blind spots.
The Nissan Cube's main engine choice is a 1.6-litre petrol engine, available as either manual or automatic. There is a rarer diesel option, but it's harder to find in the UK. The Cube shares its petrol engine with the Micra and Note, and prioritises comfort over speed.
All Nissan Cube models come with air conditioning, electric windows and a panoramic glass roof with sunshade as standard. Higher trim models add climate control, and the Kaizen trim features Nissan Connect, a system with Bluetooth connectivity, sat nav and a reversing camera.
Officially the Nissan Cube manages fuel consumption of around 40 to 42 mpg for the 1.6 petrol engine. Real-world figures may be a little lower, especially for automatics. Running costs are fair given the space – but less efficient than some other small cars.
Look for a full service history and ensure all electronics, including the sunroof, work properly. Some owners report a dashboard squeak. Check for accidental damage due to the quirky shape. For extra peace of mind, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
The Cube uses tried-and-tested Nissan engineering (its petrol engine is identical to the Micra and Note), making it a safe bet for reliability. Owner feedback highlights few mechanical issues and solid build quality – but as with any used car, regular servicing is key to worry-free motoring.
