If you need a rugged, roomy 4x4 that takes rough roads in its stride, the Nissan Patrol could be for you.
Known for its off-road capability and seating for up to seven, it combines power and practicality. The Nissan Patrol is built for big challenges – from towing the family caravan to navigating muddy trails. It is especially popular with drivers who need generous space but value old-school durability. First produced in 1951, used models in the UK from 1998 to 2004, mainly from the Y61 generation, come in three-door short-wheelbase or five-door long-wheelbase versions and received a major facelift and improved suspension in 2002. It stands out for its reliability and size, with low-ratio gears and centre differential locks making it a real off-roader, yet with enough room to comfortably seat a whole family of weekend warriors.
The Nissan Patrol comes with dual front airbags, side-impact door beams and has a strong ladder-frame construction. Advanced driver aids are limited, as these cars rely more on their sturdy build for safety. Later models, especially after 2000, include anti-lock brakes (ABS).
UK-market Nissan Patrols from 1998 came with a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, upgraded to a 3.0-litre DI turbodiesel in 2000. This balanced power with improved efficiency. Both engines offer a sturdy performance, but the 3.0-litre is better for towing and motorway driving.
Technology in the Patrol focuses on practicality. Expect electric windows, air conditioning (on all but basic trims) and a modest stereo system. Later SE and SVE models have extra comforts, but the Patrol aims to be rugged and easy to maintain rather than high-tech.
The Nissan Patrol is not known for fuel efficiency. The official figure for the 3.0-litre turbodiesel is around 26mpg combined. Real-world running can be thirstier, especially off-road or towing a full load – worth factoring in if low running costs are a priority.
Look for a full service history and signs of heavy off-road use or excessive rust underneath. Test all the 4x4 functions and check for any engine warning lights. For added peace of mind, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection for a thorough review by experts.
The Patrol has a good reputation for reliability, thanks to its simple, proven engineering. Nissan’s low average repair costs are also reassuring. As with any old-school 4x4, good maintenance is key. Well-cared-for Patrols can clock up high mileages while remaining trouble-free.
