Overall rating 3.5/5The most recent generation blends Toyota’s renowned reliability with powerful engines and a surprisingly usable everyday character. Originally launched in 1978 and legendary in the 1990s, it returned in 2019 as the GR Supra, closely related to the BMW Z4. It features turbo petrol engines (2.0-litre and 3.0-litre straight-six), a well-equipped cabin, rugged styling, and offers more space and comfort than many coupés in its class.
Every recent Toyota Supra comes with useful safety kit, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and e-Call emergency assistance. Higher-spec 3.0-litre versions add rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors to aid in tricky car park manoeuvres.
Supras from 2019 onwards offer a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo and a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo, both petrol. The 2.0 comes with an automatic gearbox only, while the 3.0 offers both automatic and manual transmissions (manual available from 2022). Earlier models had straight-six petrol engines only.
The Supra features BMW's iDrive infotainment system on an 8.8-inch screen, with sharp graphics, sat-nav, DAB radio, and Apple CarPlay (Android Auto is not compatible). Higher trims upgrade the speaker system and add features like a heads-up display, wireless phone charging, and adaptive cruise control.
The 2.0-litre engine offers an official combined figure of around 37mpg, while the 3.0-litre achieves over 30mpg if driven gently. Real-world figures can be lower but remain decent for a car of this type.
Check for cosmetic wear or damaged wheels and listen for mechanical noises during a test drive. Review the recall history and remedial work done. For extra assurance, consider opting for The AA Vehicle Inspection.
While large-scale reliability data specifically for the Supra is limited, Toyota as a brand consistently ranks highly for dependability. The existing 10-year/100,000-mile warranty offers added reassurance for used car buyers.
