Expert Opinion

As important for Renault as the Clio and Megane, the electric Zoe hatchback has proven popular since its introduction in 2013. Offering low-cost motoring with no real compromise when it comes to driving dynamics and practicality, it’s an ideal alternative to your typical Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa. Early cars were let down by a small electric range, but more recent models have been able to massage nearly 250 miles on a full charge, which is one of the best in its class.

About Renault Zoe

One of the best-selling EVs over the best part of a decade since its introduction, the Renault Zoe has only continued to grow in popularity as the years have gone by. Offering a similar footprint to Renault’s Clio supermini, the Zoe is ideal for those wanting to go electric, but not at a significant price.

A heavily revised 2020 model brought with it a substantially overhauled interior, far more in the way of technology and a much longer range.

Why buy a used Zoe?

As one of the earliest affordable EVs, the Zoe really helped many people to make that first jump into the world of electric cars. Due to its launch all the way back in 2013, used models are now impressively good value too, with prices starting from as little as £5,000. That makes it one of the cheapest ways to get into electric cars.

There’s far more to the Zoe than just its price, though, as this is a really appealing car to drive. Even earlier models that use a smaller motor feel nippy, not least around town, which is where this Renault is best suited to. The ride is also comfortable, particularly in urban areas and at lower speeds.

Another highlight of the Zoe is its styling. Even the earliest 2013 cars still look bright and modern, even next to more current models, while a digital dashboard and touchscreen also help to make this Renault feel newer than the date on its number plate might suggest.

Elsewhere inside, many will appreciate the model’s raised seating position. It’s no crossover, but it does sit a bit higher up than a normal hatchback (mainly because of the battery), but it does make it easier to get in and out of than a typical car of this size. For a compact car, interior space is also generous, with a decent amount of rear room making it comfortable, even for adults. At 338 litres the boot is a good size, too, though unlike some other electric cars, there isn’t anywhere to keep the charging cables.

There’s then the question of range. Early Zoes fitted with a small 22kWh battery can only really manage around 80 miles on a full charge, and that will only really make them suitable for urban drivers. However, as battery technology progressed – and continues to do so – that range has continued to improve, with the latest Zoe able to manage up to a claimed 245 miles on a single charge thanks to its large battery.

The latest Zoe is definitely the one to go for, with this extended range and more upmarket interior, though regardless which version you buy you’ll be left with a very likeable small electric car that should only cost pennies to run.

Here’s a short history of the Renault Zoe, which first launched in 2013.

Reanult’s Zoe makes its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, promising ‘electric mobility for all’. First deliveries would start in Spring 2013
Renault revealed its updated Zoe in 2016, bringing with it a significantly larger 41kWh battery (up from 22kWh) that increased the official range from 106 miles to 186 miles.
In 2018 a more powerful R110 motor was introduced, offering 16bhp more than the R90 setup, as well as revised specifications.
In 2020 a vastly overhauled Zoe arrives, boasting a 245-mile electric range, more powerful electric motor and a higher-quality interior

Which used Zoe should I buy?

Renault Zoe GT Line

16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, chrome-stamped grille, tinted rear windows, reversing camera, active emergency braking, blind spot warning, electric folding mirrors, 9.3-inch touchscreen.

What should I look for when buying a used Zoe?

First-generation Zoes were offered with a battery lease, which helped to reduce the cost, but means you’re subject to a monthly fee to pay for the battery. Depending on mileage, it can be up to £70 per month, though it does cover the battery if it needs replacing. This battery leasing option was dropped for the 2020 model.
Dashboard can reflect badly onto the windscreen. Check that you can deal with the glare when driving.
Gearbox doesn’t always go into park easily. Check that you can get it in this setting without forcing it.
Newer Zoes are available with 50kW rapid charging capability, but this is optional. Charging times will be far lengthier on the move for cars without this feature.
