Expert Opinion

A supermini with as much personality as any in its class, the Mazda 2 is a hatchback that's nimble, agile and fun to drive. There are eight engine/door combinations from which to choose. The cost conscious should go for the 1.3 which has extremely low running costs (up to 66mpg) and the sporty driver for the 16 valve, 1.5 Sport where they'll find 0-60 in 10.7 seconds. The Mazda 2 is well-built, durable and retains its value while housing, as standard, front airbags, deadlocks, immobiliser and alarm so you can rest safe your Mazda 2 won't go anywhere quick, unless you want it to. Visibility is particularly good for a supermini while the boot space can reach almost 800 litres. Those looking for a little extra should opt for the sport Tamura trim and get cruise control along with auto lights and wipers.

About Mazda 2

First launched in the UK in 2002, the Mazda 2 is a joy to drive, eye-catching and affordable to run. It's no wonder then that they've found such success over their ten year history.

While it doesn't have some of the same refinements that its rivals on the market do, it offers one of the best drives in its class, and an all-round driving experience that few others can match.

Why buy a used 2?

While not a leader in the supermini market, the Mazda 2 is widely regarded to be one of the best built and designed cars on the market. This is largely down to its drive, which is one of the most fun in its class.

In the cabin the car is spacious, although not market leading, with around 250 litres of luggage space on offer at its smallest, and decent room for four passengers. Build quality is good though, and maintains the chic design of the chassis with an emphasis on clean lines and rounded edges.

Performance options are either a 1.3 or 1.5 petrol, or a 1.6 diesel, with the smaller petrol option providing a good mix of performance and economy. However, if you are looking for a more comfortable drive on the motorway, the 1.5 is arguably the most suitable option. Although some regard the Mazda 2 engines as unrefined compared to some of its competitors, they do have more life, and are better suited to eager drivers.

Handling in the 2 is some of the best in its class, and the responsive steering and minimal body roll give it one of the more sportier drives in the supermini category. This doesn't always carry on into the ride however, and the suspension can sometimes feel a little too slight - especially when dealing with potholes - to make it one of the smoothest or most comfortable on the market.

The most economical to run of the range is understandably the diesel, which returns nearly 70mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km, but the petrol engines fare well too. Offering returns closer to the 50mpg mark, they remain competitive in their class, while their CO2 emissions place them in affordable tax brackets. With a good reputation for reliability, upkeep costs should be low, which means that overall the Mazda 2 is an affordable car to run.

Mazda 2

The Mazda 2 is a stylish and fun car, which has remained popular over its ten year history.

Here's a short history of the Mazda 2, starting in 2002 when it was first released in the UK.

  • The first Mazda 2 was introduced in 2002 and was a renamed second generation of the Mazda 121. In Japan the car was known as the Demio.
  • The response to the Mazda 2 was good, particularly in Japan, where it has consistently been one of the highest selling cars in the country.
  • The second generation 2 was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. It was built using the new DE platform which Ford had used on their 2008 Ford Fiesta.
  • In 2008 a hatchback, three door version of the Mazda 2 was released in Europe.
  • That same year the 2 is named World Car of the Year.

What should I look for when buying a used 2?

What to look for in a Mazda 2
  • Have a look around the outside of the car for signs of rust or corrosion, then check under the bonnet for the same.
  • Check the top of the engine and underneath the engine oil cap for any emulsion, which could signify a damaged head gasket or potentially serious engine damage.
  • A common Mazda 2 complaint has been that the boot switch can become faulty. Check that you are able to lock the boot and that there is no damage on the rubber boot switch. If there is this will likely need to be replaced.
  • Take the car out for a test drive and check when starting the car that the DPF light on the dashboard comes on with the ignition, but then goes off once the engine is running. If the light remains on after a few miles of driving, check to see if the engine management warning light is also on. If these lights are on it could mean the DPF filter needs to be replaced.
  • Radios in 2s can sometimes stop working in very cold conditions so its worth turning it on to make sure it works. This however, is only a problem with the radio, and not the full electrical system.
  • When out on the road listen for a click when the clutch is pushed down and then released. If this is the case there may be flex in the pedal box and so will need to be adjusted.
