The Jeep Renegade gets plenty of safety features, including a speed assistance and lane assistance systems. The latter will help guide the car along a lane and can intervene if it notices the vehicle drifting. There’s an airbag shut-off switch if you need to put a child seat up front, though the two ISOFIX mounting point on the rear outer chairs will be easier to access.

The Renegade was launched with a 1.4-litre petrol engine available with both front- and four-wheel-drive before being joined by a 1.6-litre unit with mild-hybrid technology. The 1.6-litre was swapped out for a 1.0-litre, while the 1.4-litre was swapped out for a 1.3-litre version. For used buyers, this means there’s a great level of variety engine-wise. A 1.6- or 2.0-litre diesel was also available. In 2020, a plug-in hybrid was added to the Renegade, providing up to 30 miles of electric-only running. A later 1.5-litre engine with mild-hybrid technology is also available.

All cars get creature comforts such as air conditioning and a five-inch infotainment screen, though later models see this upgraded to a 10.0-inch display - look out for these versions as they get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, too. If you’re after the best possible levels of equipment, then consider the Limited specification as it adds dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and a leather interior, among other features.

Expect to get around 47mpg from the 1.4-litre petrol, or 42mpg for later 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre models. Diesels, meanwhile, can achieve around 64.2mpg, though this was submitted under older NEDC testing schedules. Keep it fully charged and the plug-in hybrid can achieve 128.4mpg, though you’ll have to be running on mostly electric power in order to get this.

While most Renegades will have spent the bulk of their lives on the road, the odd model - particularly those with four-wheel-drive, may have ventured off-road, so check the underneath of the car for any damage.
