Overall rating 4/5Not quite as soft as the crossovers it competes with, the Compass is Jeep's version of an on-road off roader: comfortable and refined, but still raw and rugged.

Although Jeep essentially invented the 4X4, the changing tastes of drivers has seen the public's buying habits stray further and further from the raw, unrefined ability of the nature of the Jeep towards more sedate and comfortable softroaders. So the release of the Compass, a crossover SUV primed to compete with the Qashqai and Freelander, should come as no surprise. It is still Jeep however, so ability remains on the rugged and capable end of the softroader scale. The 2.2 litre diesel is the best of the range, providing low down pull and power, which gives it gumption off road, but leaves it a bit unrefined when on it.
