BMW 3 Series

Think BMW and chances are the 3 Series will come to mind. It's essentially BMW's core product, and has been part of its range for over 50 years. It has been a successful car for BMW, and a benchmark that all other compact executive cars are judged against. The current seventh-generation car, codenamed G20, has been around since 2019, and just like its predecessors, it offers a class-leading blend of kerb appeal, fine driving dynamics, technology, and performance. Since its launch, BMW has subtly updated it with two facelifts, and, more recently, slimmed down the engine range to focus on efficiency.

Peugeot 308

The 308 is positioned to compete with established rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, and Vauxhall Astra, appealing to those in need of a compact family hatchback.

Volvo EX90

Before Hyundai and Kia came along to expand the premium electric SUV market, the Volvo EX90 was positioned as one of the most desirable full‑size seven‑seat EVs, offering genuine space for adults in all three rows. It arrived with much fanfare, promising the very latest in advanced safety, including a LiDAR unit mounted on the roof for sensing the road ahead and interior sensors designed to detect vulnerable occupants, such as children and pets. But there’s no escaping the price tag — even the entry‑level EX90 starts well north of £80,000 in the UK, which could work against it, especially when a 351‑mile WLTP range is also not the highest in its class.

Suzuki Ignis

The Suzuki Ignis has been around for a while now, with the first iteration of the model appearing in 2016 and then a facelift in 2020, which is no longer available new, but remained on sale until 2025. Although now discontinued, it still makes a strong case for itself in the booming small crossover market. Key rivals include the Kia Picanto X-Line, Fiat Panda Cross, Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo X and the Dacia Sandero Stepway, all of which offer compact dimensions and crossover-inspired styling in a similar mould to the Suzuki.

Polestar 4

The Polestar 4 is easily one of the more interesting new electric cars to have launched in the past couple of years. Sitting between the existing 2 hatchback and equally new 3 SUV, the 4 positions itself as a coupe-SUV that rivals similarly upmarket models like the Audi Q6 e-tron and Porsche Macan Electric. The 4 is the firmest example yet of the Swedish performance brand's focus on building premium EVs that ooze Scandi style, quality and bold design. The car is most well-known for its lack of a rear window, instead relying on a camera system, but the 4 is more than just a statement piece.
