The BYD Seal achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and comes packed with essential safety features. These include autonomous emergency braking, active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and multiple airbags. All models get front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera as standard, making parking and urban driving easier.

Every BYD Seal for sale in the UK is purely electric. There are two versions – the Design, with a single rear-mounted motor and rear-wheel drive, and the Excellence, which adds a second motor up front and boosts power with four-wheel drive. Both use an 82.5kWh battery – the main decision is between higher range or stronger performance.

Every BYD Seal is well-equipped, with even entry-level models getting a 15.6-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Dynaudio sound system, heated and ventilated electric seats and a panoramic glass roof. The infotainment system can be operated in portrait or landscape, letting you tailor your setup to your own preference.

The BYD Seal doesn’t use fuel in the traditional sense – it’s a battery electric vehicle. Official range for the Design version is up to 354 miles, with the Excellence slightly lower. Real-world ranges are somewhat lower – around 255 to 300 miles between charges, depending on driving style and conditions. Charging from 10 to 80% takes around 38 minutes on a rapid charger.

Check for completed software updates, condition of charging cables (which are ideally stored in the front ‘frunk’) and verify the battery’s warranty paperwork. Because the Seal is new on the used market, it’s wise to get a full mechanical and battery health inspection – The AA Vehicle Inspection service can give extra peace of mind.

It’s early days for UK buyers, but BYD offers a long six-year/93,750-mile car warranty and an eight-year/125,000-mile battery warranty, which is reassuring. Early reports suggest the build quality is solid, but a lack of long-term reliability data in the UK is something to be aware of as the cars age.
