Like so many brands, Cupra is focused on electrification, which is why in 2022 it launched its first electric vehicle with the Born. It’s based on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform, too, which means it shares many components with other cars from under that umbrella such as the Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.3.

The Born has only been on sale in the new-car market for a handful of years, but because it has been quite a popular option during that time there are plenty to choose from on the used market. As with all EVs, the Born brings the potential for some very low running costs, particularly if you’re able to take advantage of low off-peak rates of electricity at home. With a decent amount of range and a good level of in-car tech, the Born is a great EV for those looking to make the switch to a battery-powered model for the first time.
The Born is still a very new car, so it’s packed with the latest safety features. Highlights include front collision assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, as well as emergency steering assist which can take control of the vehicle and ‘steer’ away from a collision. It also has a clever eCall system which can automatically contact the emergency services if the car detects that it has been in a collision.
The Cupra Born might be an electric vehicle, but you can still get it with a series of powertrain options. The most notable options are between battery sizes, with a 58kWh and 77kWh unit available delivering respective ranges of 264 and 341 miles. You’ve also got the option of either single- or dual-motor setups, with the latter bringing all-wheel-drive in the process.
The key piece of technology in the Born is its 12-inch infotainment system which includes all key media and navigation functions, as well as both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring systems. There’s also a 5.3-inch digital cockpit ahead of the driver and this can be configured to show different information depending on your need, as well as all key driver readouts such as speed and range.
The Cupra Born is an electric vehicle, but it can be charged at speeds of up to 125kW, which would result in a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking around 30 minutes when the car is connected to a rapid charger.
The Cupra Born is still a relatively new vehicle, which means that there shouldn’t be too many issues. However, all cars do come on relatively large alloy wheels, so we’d check these over for damage. The Born is a popular city car, too, so have a look at the bumpers for any grazes or dents, too. If you’d like a trained engineer to take a look at a used Born for you, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. They’ll be able to let you know about any issues they encounter on the car.
Cupra Born vehicles are largely reliable, with their electric powertrain meaning fewer moving parts and fewer mechanical issues compared with a traditional petrol or diesel car. There have been some reports of issues with the main screen, however, so double-check that this is all working as it should.
