There’s a lot of safety equipment on board the Ateca, with highlights including pre-crash assist - which can adjust the car’s steering to avoid or reduce the impact of an incident - as well as predictive adaptive cruise control and travel assist. Some of the newer Ateca models also get exit assist, which will sound a warning when exiting a parking space when pedestrians or other road users are approaching.

The Cupra Ateca launched with a punchy 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and four-wheel-drive, but since then the brand has added a more sedate 1.5-litre petrol to the list of available engines for the Ateca. There are no manual gearbox options for the Cupra Ateca, either, with just an automatic there to choose from.

Standard Ateca models come very well equipped, bringing features such as 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and a 9.2-inch infotainment system as standard. As you move up through the grades, expect to find added luxuries such as a rear-view camera, electric driver seat and a power tailgate.Range-topping models get heated seats, adaptive cruise control and leather upholstery.

You can expect to get in the region of 40mpg from the entry-level 1.5-litre engine, whereas the 2.0-litre model sees this drop to around 30mpg.

The Cupra Ateca is pitched as a sportier model, so we’d be looking for signs that the car has been driven hard. Worn-out tyres and squeaky brakes could be tell-tale signs, as could a brake pedal which feels far too soft and long.
