AA Cars review

The Ford Mustang Mach-e was one of the pioneers of electric cars with strong performance and a long range, while the iconic name makes it instantly memorable. It’s great value, too, especially as a used car.

How much does it cost?

A brand-new Mustang Mach-E starts from £42,340 for the entry-level Select Standard Range RWD, rising to around £66,050 for the Extended Range GT AWD. Generous standard equipment and advanced driver aids are included across the range, with only a handful of options and packs available. On the used market, early examples are available from as little as £16,000 on AA Cars, which will get you a 2021 Select model with a slightly higher than average mileage. Early depreciation appears to be quite sharp. But that means you’ll get a lot of car for the money – the Mach-E’s equipment levels, strong performance, and low running costs make it a very appealing second-hand car.

Engine and performance

Overview

The Mustang Mach-E is offered exclusively with all-electric powertrains, with customers able to choose from Standard Range (70 kWh battery) and Extended Range (91 kWh battery) versions, in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Power outputs range from 267bhp in the entry-level RWD to 484bhp in the flagship GT. All are rapid – the Standard Range RWD sprints from 0–62 mph in a brisk 6.9 seconds, while the Extended Range AWD drops this to 5.8 seconds.

The range-topping GT covers the same sprint in just 3.7 seconds, putting it on par with many sports saloons. Instant electric torque ensures effortless acceleration in all models. Official WLTP driving ranges are competitive despite the Mach-E being a fairly established EV, with the Extended Range RWD offering up to 372 miles on a single charge (WLTP), and the AWD version achieving up to 336 miles. The GT sacrifices some range for its pace, but still offers a credible 304 miles. All Mach-E models feature one-pedal driving, regenerative braking, and selectable drive modes.

Out on the road

The Mustang Mach-E is quite an easy car to get on with, despite its lively performance. Around town, the electric powertrain’s instant torque makes for easy progress, with silent running and smooth throttle response. The high driving position and large windows provide good visibility, though the rear view is somewhat compromised by the sloping roofline. In urban settings, the Mach-E’s light steering and well-calibrated throttle make it easy to manoeuvre. Tight spaces are navigated with the help of standard parking sensors and a rear-view camera. On A-roads and motorways, it comes alive; the Mach-E feeling stable and composed, and pleasingly fast. Road and wind noise are well suppressed. The GT variant adds a sharper edge, with more drive-focused suspension and astonishing acceleration.

Ride and handling

Ford has always liked to set benchmarks in chassis engineering, and with a legendary performance name to live up to, the Mustang Mach-E had to deliver the goods. Luckily, it does. The chassis is well balanced, with the large battery pack mounted in the floor, giving the car a low centre of gravity and aiding grip. Steering is direct and accurate, offering good feedback for an SUV of this size and impressive turn-in, while the ride is comfortable despite the sharp handling and eager steering. Body roll is well contained, and the Mach-E feels agile in corners despite its weight. The GT is something else, with tenacious grip, fast, direct responses and incredible acceleration. Interior and features

Interiors

A modern layout and plenty of space are the two key things you notice about the Mach-E when you first climb aboard. The minimalist dashboard is dominated by a 15.5-inch portrait-orientated central touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC 4A system, complemented by a slim 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Soft-touch surfaces, quality fabrics or leather (on higher trims), and subtle Mustang motifs reinforce the car’s upmarket branding. The cabin feels airy thanks to a panoramic fixed glass roof (standard or optional, depending on trim), and there’s plenty of legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers. There’s ample space for child seats, with Isofix points on the outer rear seats. The seats are supportive and comfortable, but rear visibility isn’t brilliant.

Boot space and practicality

The Mach-E is designed with family life in mind. Its 402-litre boot is practical and well-shaped, expanding to 1,420 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Though some rivals offer marginally bigger boots, the Mach-E counters this with a 100-litre front trunk (frunk), ideal for charging cables, small bags, or muddy boots. The rear seats split 60:40 and fold almost flat, enabling flexible load carrying. The Mach-E also benefits from a low loading lip and powered tailgate on the higher trim levels. Wide-opening doors and a relatively high roofline make access easy for passengers of all ages. Interior storage is plentiful, including cupholders, cubbies, and a deep centre armrest compartment.

Features

All Mach-E models come well-equipped. Even the entry-level version includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, keyless entry/start, adaptive cruise control, and a comprehensive suite of driver aids. Higher trims add extras such as a premium Bang&Olufsen sound system, hands-free tailgate, 360-degree camera, and enhanced driver assistance features. The GT introduces sports seats, unique interior trim, and further tech upgrades. Over-the-air software updates keep the infotainment system fresh and add features over time, ensuring owners benefit from ongoing enhancements.

Trim and colour options

The Mustang Mach-E range includes several well-appointed trims, namely Select (Standard Range RWD), Premium (Extended Range RWD or AWD), and the high-performance GT (Extended Range AWD). The entry-level Select trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15.5-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment system. Standard equipment also comprises dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, and a rear-view camera.

Premium adds 19-inch alloys, a powered tailgate, a panoramic glass roof, heated front seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded 10-speaker B&O sound system. The range-topping GT offers performance-oriented enhancements, including unique 20-inch alloys, MagneRide adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes, and exclusive exterior styling elements. Inside, it gets sports seats with unique upholstery and contrast stitching, aluminium pedals, and additional comfort features. Cyber Orange paint is exclusive to the GT, further distinguishing its appearance. Colour options include subtle shades like Shadow Black and Space White and more vibrant choices such as Rapid Red, Star White, Grabber Blue, and the GT-only Cyber Orange.

Safety and reliability

The Mustang Mach-E achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating when tested in 2021. The results were impressive, with 92% awarded for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection, 69% for vulnerable road user safety, and 82% for safety assist technology. Standard equipment includes multiple airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping aids, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and traffic sign recognition. Early reliability ratings are positive and a three-year, 60,000-mile vehicle warranty is standard, while the battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.

MPG, emissions and tax

As a fully electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E produces zero tailpipe emissions. A WLTP-rated efficiency of around 3.0–3.8 miles per kWh means a real-world range between 230 and 300 miles is typical, depending on the model and driving conditions. Charging times vary: using a 150 kW rapid charger, the Mach-E can replenish its battery from 10–80% in as little as 38 minutes. Home charging via a 7.4 kW wall-box takes around 10 hours for a full charge. Being an electric car, the Mach-E qualifies for £10 first year road tax (VED), but the Expensive Car Supplement means years two to five will cost £620 a year in tax, with the current rate being £195 a year after that. Insurance groups range from 34 to 50, reflecting the car’s performance and value. Servicing intervals are every two years or 18,000 miles, with Ford offering fixed-price EV service plans and an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty for added peace of mind.
