Overall rating 3.5/5Launched in 1998, the Maserati 3200 was designed to offer comfort, performance and distinctive looks in a refined coupe package. It features classic 2+2 seating and a roomy rear by sports car standards – making it slightly more practical than some rivals. Built until 2002, it’s now seen as a modern classic, known for its boomerang-shaped LED tail lights and engaging handling. The Maserati 3200 went up against competitors like the Porsche 911 and Jaguar XK8, but stood apart thanks to its characterful twin-turbo engine and bold design. Today, it’s popular with enthusiasts who value individuality, style and sound as much as outright speed.
Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS and traction control. It was solidly built for its time, but doesn’t have modern systems like emergency braking or lane assist, so a bit of extra care on the road is wise.
Every Maserati 3200 uses the same 3.2-litre twin-turbocharged V8, producing around 370hp. It’s paired with either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, depending on the version. This engine was replaced by a naturally aspirated V8 in the 4200 GT (Maserati Coupe), which launched in 2002.
Standard features include leather seats, climate control and an integrated stereo system. Tech is basic by today’s standards – most cars have radio and CD players, and some higher trims included optional sat nav, though retrofits are common in used examples.
Expect around 18–22mpg depending on how and where you drive. Steady cruising can return better figures, but the turbocharged engine tends to encourage more spirited use, which impacts economy.
Look for a full service history with evidence of regular cambelt changes (every three to four years is ideal). Common areas to inspect include clutch wear, turbocharger health, electrical systems and dashboard electronics. For peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
They can be reliable if well maintained by a specialist. That said, parts are expensive and neglect can lead to costly repairs. A properly looked-after example will reward you with a unique ownership experience – but don’t skip on maintenance history.
