Overall rating 4.5/5The Audi Q5 first appeared in the UK in 2008, quickly becoming a popular choice among premium mid-sized SUVs. The secret to its success? Combining the kind of dependable everyday practicality that families love with the interior quality you’d expect from an Audi. Over three generations (2008–2017, 2017–2024, 2025-present), the Q5 has developed a reputation for quiet comfort, confident all-weather performance (thanks to its quattro four-wheel drive) and enough space for most families.
Competitors like the BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 offer strong alternatives, but the Q5 often wins on cabin quality and performance. All versions feature a five-seat layout and a boot large enough for school bags, suitcases or a hefty weekly shop. Engine choices cover more economical diesels, powerful petrols and a highly capable sporty variant, the SQ5. The newer models add mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid tech for better efficiency.
Key features include high safety ratings, a roomy and flexible cabin, clever tech and solid residual values. Then there's the driving experience – it gives you a calmness and composure that makes even longer journeys go by with ease.

Every Audi Q5 comes with a reassuring suite of safety features. Expect multiple airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes and Audi’s pre sense collision mitigation system on newer models. Later versions also include lane departure warning and city emergency braking as standard, helping the Q5 secure high marks in Euro NCAP tests.
Audi has offered the Q5 with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines over the years. Earlier cars make use of the 2.0-litre TDI diesels and 2.0-litre TFSI petrols, with more powerful 3.0-litre V6 options for those seeking extra punch. Newer Q5s add mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid (TFSIe) choices, then there's the SQ5 model for a sportier drive thanks to its turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine.
Depending on age and trim, you’ll find a clear infotainment screen with Bluetooth, DAB radio and smartphone connectivity as standard. Later Q5s include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit on some versions, giving you a customisable digital dashboard with crisp graphics. The latest generation features improved cockpit and central screens with updated displays.
Diesel Q5s offer the best economy, with 2.0 TDIs managing real-world figures of 35–40mpg – though keep in mind that the best figures are for later models with stop-start technology. Petrol versions are thirstier, averaging around 30mpg, while the plug-in hybrid TFSIe can provide impressive official numbers, hitting 166-188 combined miles per gallon.
Look out for full service history, especially on the manual gearbox and automatic S Tronic gearbox. On older diesels, check that the cambelt has been replaced. Inspect for any dashboard warning lights and make sure all the electrics are working as they should. It’s also important to listen out for any odd noises from the suspension, which can hint at worn components. If all this is a bit too much for you, we got you covered with the AA vehicle inspection. Most owners find the Q5 to be a solid and robust car, but as with many premium SUVs, repair costs can be high if things do go wrong. Earlier Q5s sometimes saw issues with automatic gearboxes, electrics and, for petrols, higher oil consumption. Diesel models need regular longer runs to keep the DPF (diesel particulate filter) clear. Reliability has improved in later versions, but it’s wise to budget for care and maintenance.
Engine sizes range from the popular TFSI 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel units up to 3.0-litre V6s found in higher-spec and SQ5 models. As with most manufacturers, Audi has introduced hybrid options into the latest generation of their line-up. Mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Q5 combine a 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engine with electric motors for improved efficiency.
