Used Triumph TR6 for sale

The Triumph TR6 dates from a period before modern safety kit was widely available. You’ll find front disc brakes, a sturdy chassis and reliable handling for the era, but not airbags or modern crumple zones. Many cars are fitted with improved seatbelts, and some owners add roll bars or upgraded lighting for peace of mind.

Every TR6 is powered by Triumph’s 2.5-litre straight-six engine. UK market cars use Lucas mechanical fuel injection and offer up to 150bhp (early), dropping to around 125bhp (later models with mild cam). US-bound TR6s came with twin carburettors and less power for emissions reasons. All share a characteristic, torquey delivery.

As a 1970s classic, the TR6 only has basic technology: you’ll find clear Smiths analogue gauges, heating, sometimes a radio and a wooden dashboard. Unlike modern cars, there are no digital displays or infotainment systems, but the simplicity adds to its charm.

In the 70s, owners could expect around 18–23mpg, with injected engines generally less economical than carburettor versions. Today, careful upkeep, sensible driving and modern fuels might push this to over 25mpg for some, but most find themselves averaging around 20–22mpg in mixed use.

Look closely for rust, particularly on the chassis, sills, suspension mounts and boot floor. Inspect the condition of the soft top, electrics and fuel injection (in PI models), and check for oily leaks or engine noises. A checkup by The AA Vehicle Inspection is always sensible – especially with classic cars.

A well-maintained TR6 can be a faithful classic. Its engineering is straightforward and there’s excellent support, but age brings its own quirks. Regular use and attentive servicing minimise headaches, but plan for periodic fettling – especially with the fuel injection system and electrical gremlins. Spares are widely available in the UK.
