Overall rating 4/5Introduced in 2016, the Suzuki Celerio arrived as one of the UK’s cheapest cars. How did it achieve this? Well, with a streamlined specifications list and just one engine option, the Celerio could really nail down on price and undercut much of the competition.Because it began from a relatively inexpensive price, a used Celerio is a great-value proposition and one which will no doubt seem tempting to drivers after a cheap runabout or first-time motorists looking to get a car that won’t cost the earth to run and insure.
The Suzuki Celerio benefits from a full stability control program which can help to manage a slide or skid should it occur. You’ll also find a tyre pressure monitoring system included on all models, which will flash a warning if it detects that a tyre is running low on air. There are also airbags for both the driver and passenger included on all cars.
There’s just a single engine available with the Celerio. It’s a 1.0-litre three-cylinder which prioritises efficiency and good fuel economy over everything else. However, you can get it with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automated manual gearbox - the latter is similar to an automatic, but can take a little bit of getting used to. Low CO2 emissions will mean that the Celerio will be cheap to tax, too.
All cars get a CD player as standard, as well as digital radio controlled via a simple-to-use setup. Step up to SZ3 trim and the standard equipment becomes far more plentiful, with features such as 14-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity now included. If you want the most features available, look out for range-topping SZ4 models. All windows are electrically operated at this spec, while you also get electrically adjustable wing mirrors.
Fuel efficiency is a strong subject for the Celerio - it comes with an official figure of between 65.7 and 78.4mpg. However, these were generated under older NEDC testing regimes, so you may get slightly less during real-world driving. It’ll still prove to be a very fuel-efficient choice.
As a popular around-town runabout, the Celerio is a car which could be prone to the type of damage that cars experience in urban areas. Check the doors for car-park dings and look at the bumpers for any scratches or grazes. Though there’s little go wrong on the Celerio, we’d still check that all of the major controls work and that the air-conditioning blows cold on cars with it fitted. If you’d like more information about a car you’re looking to buy, then an AA Vehicle Inspection is here to help. A trained engineer will take a look at the car and feed back their findings via a detailed report.
The Suzuki Celerio is a largely reliable option, but a significant recall was issued relating to the braking system. Make sure that this has been completed and, if it hasn’t, you may need to negotiate to get the issue rectified before your purchase. In this instance, an AA Vehicle Inspection could help to provide extra clarity.
