Known for its clever use of space, it's a reliable and head-turning choice for city or suburban living. The Suzuki Ignis is a unique city car with an SUV-like build and a distinctive exterior look. Designed for urban journeys but capable of countryside escapes, it offers good cabin space and a surprisingly large boot for its size. First launched in 2000, the Ignis returned in 2016 with a bold, modern design and mild-hybrid technology. The 2020 facelift brought more rugged looks and improved efficiency, and all models aim for practicality, affordability and a light, airy interior. Compared to rivals like the Fiat Panda or Toyota Aygo X, the Ignis gives you a four-wheel drive option and hybrid power in a city-friendly body. It's especially suitable for buyers who want easy parking, low running costs and a dash of personality.
The Suzuki Ignis comes equipped with six airbags, stability control and ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard. Top-spec versions add lane departure warnings, a weaving alert and autonomous emergency braking. The Ignis' safety features are more basic than some rivals – especially in earlier models.
Since 2016, the Suzuki Ignis has had only one engine choice: a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency and responsiveness. You can, however, choose between manual and CVT automatic gearboxes and add the optional AllGrip four-wheel drive if you need extra traction.
The basic Ignis includes a USB port, Bluetooth and a CD player. The SZ-T and SZ5 trims add a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – good thing, as its software is slow and dated. The SZ5 also has sat nav.
Fuel consumption for the Suzuki Ignis is impressive, thanks to its mild-hybrid assistance. You can get between 52 and 58 mpg, depending on whether you opt for two- or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic. Real-word results vary, but the Ignis is definitely efficient for an SUV.
Check for battery charging, fuel tank and drive belt issues – these were all subjects of previous recalls. Also watch out for uneven tyre wear and basic infotainment problems on older models. Why not consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection for peace of mind?
The Suzuki Ignis has a good reputation for dependability, with only a small number of recalls affecting earlier models. The mild-hybrid system and simple running gear are robust, and Suzuki's widespread UK dealer network makes servicing easy. Regular care and attention should ensure long, low-stress ownership.
