Overall rating 4.5/5Drivers value its strong reliability record and generous boot, making it a viable choice for families or anyone looking for an efficient all-rounder. The Suzuki Baleno offers plenty of room, comfort and easy ownership. Launched in the UK in 2016, this generation was on the market until 2019. It slots alongside the sporty Swift in Suzuki’s range, focusing on practicality over playful looks. It rivals the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 and Skoda Fabia, often undercutting them on price while matching them for usable space. Most used models are powered by a lively three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, with a mild hybrid (MHEV) 1.2 also available. Even basic versions are well kitted out, with higher-spec variants adding advanced safety tech and sat nav. Today, the Baleno is sought after for its roomy boot, affordable running costs and practical motoring experience.
The Suzuki Baleno received a four-star Euro NCAP rating when fitted with the optional Radar Brake Support package. Standard safety kit includes six airbags, ESP and ISOFIX mounts. The SZ5 trim adds radar brake assist and adaptive cruise control, offering added assurance on long motorway journeys.
Most used Suzuki Balenos offer either a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol (109bhp) or a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol (89bhp). Both were available during the 2016-2019 UK sales period. The 1.0 Boosterjet brings more punch on the motorway, while the 1.2 MHEV focuses on top fuel efficiency.
All Balenos come with Bluetooth, DAB radio and air conditioning as standard. You even get sat-nav and a reverse parking camera. SZ-T models and above add a touchscreen infotainment system, while the top SZ5 brings climate control and LED headlights. Controls are simple and visibility is excellent – especially useful for those new to driving.
The 1.2 MHEV boasts an official combined fuel figure of up to 70.6mpg, while the 1.0 Boosterjet returns around 62.7mpg on paper. Both engines deliver strong real-world economy – an appealing trait for everyday drivers and those keeping an eye on pump prices.
Look over the bodywork for car park dings and alloy wheel kerb marks. Check that the stop/start function and mild hybrid systems are working, as a few recalls related to battery charging and the integrated starter generator have been issued. Consider a professional once-over, like The AA Vehicle Inspection, for extra peace of mind.
Suzuki has a well-earned reputation for reliability in the UK, and the Baleno is no exception. Suzuki placed among the top brands in recent reliability surveys, and while there are a handful of recalls, these are well-documented and usually simple for a main dealer to fix.
