Citroen Berlingo

For many families, tradespeople and small business owners, the Berlingo represents a no-nonsense approach to motoring with plenty of room inside, durability and a character all its own. The current, third-generation car has been around since 2018, although it was given a major facelift in 2023. It offers a greater focus on modern technology and comfort than its predecessors – with a fully electric version now available for the first time – while still retaining the spirit that made those older vehicles so popular. However, with SUVs seemingly sweeping all that goes before, and strong competition from the likes of the Ford Tourneo Connect, does the Berlingo still have what it takes to not only survive but thrive? We’ve been taking a closer look to find out.

Skoda Enyaq

Skoda’s Enyaq has long been considered one of the more sensible and practical family electric SUVs. It’s spacious, easy to drive and designed to slot into busy lifestyles without causing a scene. It may come as no surprise, then, that the Enyaq has been a runaway success for Skoda, with the brand recently giving one of its best-selling EVs a stylistic and technological refresh in order to keep it in fighting shape. For those wanting an electric vehicle that handles the grunt work, things don’t get much better than this.

Vauxhall Mokka Electric

The new Mokka could not have been further away from what came before, with Vauxhall giving the car a more exciting and youthful look. Also significant was the brand’s decision to launch the new Mokka alongside a fully electric version from day one – giving it a significant head start on many of its rivals. The move certainly paid off with the Mokka – and its electric variant in particular – proving to be a sales success for Vauxhall. However, in a crowded market of small SUVs like the Peugeot e-2008, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV and Jeep Avenger Electric, does the Mokka still represent a good option for buyers in 2026? We’ve been taking a closer look to find out.

Volkswagen Passat

With Volkswagen moving to an increasingly electrified range, the Passat isn’t the tour-de-force it once was in the firm’s line up. Previously, it was a fleet favourite offered in multiple body styles and powertrains, but today it’s only offered as an estate and with a 1.5-litre TSI mild-hybrid petrol engine, or as a plug-in hybrid with the same powertrain. It uses VW’s latest advanced technology and a focus on premium materials and connectivity to compete with the likes of Skoda Superb, Peugeot 508 SW, and Mazda 6 Tourer, in a package that’s subtly stylish and beautifully engineered.

The BMW iX is a car that stood at the absolute pinnacle of BMW’s EV technological prowess at the turn of the decade but has since been joined by numerous rivals. A recent mid-life refresh has bestowed the iX with an updated exterior and improved electric range in certain models. But above all else, the iX remains a spacious and comfortable SUV that is designed to swallow family life and transport it around in the most relaxing manner possible. It does so while offering an array of cutting-edge in-car technologies, a classy cabin and the ability to charge its batteries quickly.

Peugeot 408

Introduced in 2023, the Peugeot 408 offers buyers an unconventional blend of coupé-inspired styling and SUV practicality, with bold, angular design influences, innovative features, and a focus on refinement and efficiency. Built on the EMP2 V3 platform, shared with models like the Peugeot 308 and Citroën C5 X, the range includes a choice of efficient petrol engines and advanced plug-in hybrids, but there is no diesel derivative. The 408’s rivals include the Renault Arkana, Citroën C5 X, and even premium options like the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake, as it has a high-quality, premium feel that has been core to Peugeot’s brand transformation in the 2020s.
