What are the most reliable family cars for safety and comfort?

Jack Evans

By Jack Evans

When you choose a family car, you need more than enough seats and a large boot. It has to start reliably each morning, keep everyone comfortable and provide the safety features you need for everyday driving.

No car is completely fault-free. Reliability can vary by engine, model year, mileage and maintenance history. Euro NCAP ratings also reflect the standards and equipment assessed in a particular test year, so check the result for the exact generation you’re considering.

We’ve picked 5 family cars that combine comfort, safety and everyday practicality. We’ve also highlighted where the reliability evidence is mixed or still developing.

1. Skoda Octavia

Pros
  • Huge boot and passenger space
  • Comfortable on longer journeys
  • Strong 5-star safety rating
Cons
  • Reliability trails several key rivals
  • Touchscreen controls can distract
  • Ride can feel floaty
Used Skoda Octavia for sale

Space is one of the Skoda Octavia’s biggest strengths. The hatchback has a 600-litre boot, while the Octavia Estate increases this to 640 litres. Both versions provide generous rear-seat space, making them suitable for pushchairs, luggage and longer family trips. The Octavia also has a comfortable ride, particularly on motorways and smoother A-roads. Current versions include safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane assistance. Euro NCAP reassessed the Octavia in 2025 and awarded it 5 stars. Reliability results are more mixed than the Octavia’s reputation might suggest. Infotainment and electrical problems have affected some cars, so test the touchscreen, cameras, parking sensors and driver-assistance systems before buying. A complete service history is also important.

2. Toyota Corolla

Pros
  • Efficient, dependable hybrid system
  • Comfortable and easy to drive
  • Strong standard safety equipment
Cons
  • Hatchback boot is relatively small
  • Rear space trails key rivals
  • Engine gets noisy under load
Used Toyota Corolla for sale

The Toyota Corolla remains a strong family-car choice, particularly if fuel economy and dependability are priorities. Its full-hybrid system moves smoothly between petrol and electric power, making the Corolla quiet and easy to drive around town. The Corolla achieved a reliability score of 96.5% in a recent owner survey, placing it seventh out of 26 family cars. Toyota also equips current models with features including adaptive cruise control, lane-trace assistance and automatic emergency braking. The Corolla received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating when it was tested in 2019. Boot space depends on the body style and engine. The hatchback offers 313 or 361 litres, which is less than you get in several rivals. The Corolla Touring Sports is the more practical option, with up to 596 litres of luggage space.

3. Mazda CX-5

Pros
  • Spacious, well-finished family cabin
  • Supple and comfortable ride
  • Strong 5-star safety rating
Cons
  • New model lacks long-term data
  • Only one engine option
  • Gearbox can respond slowly
Used Mazda CX5 for sale Mazda CX5 Review

The Mazda CX-5 combines the higher driving position of an SUV with a well-finished cabin and a comfortable ride. The latest model has a 583-litre boot, giving families plenty of room for shopping, luggage and pushchairs. Safety is another strength. Euro NCAP awarded the latest CX-5 5 stars in 2025, with strong scores for adult, child and vulnerable road-user protection. Existing used CX-5 models have established a good reliability record when they’ve been maintained properly. However, the all-new 2026 generation is too recent for meaningful long-term owner data. It’s also available with only one engine at launch, and the automatic gearbox can be slow to respond. When considering an older diesel CX-5, check how the car has been used. Repeated short journeys can contribute to diesel particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation system problems.

4. Hyundai Kona

Pros
  • Spacious for its compact footprint
  • Comfortable and easy around town
  • 5-year unlimited-mileage warranty
Cons
  • 4-star Euro NCAP rating
  • Long-term reliability data remains limited
  • Driver alerts can feel intrusive
Used Hyundai KONA for sale

The Hyundai Kona offers SUV styling without taking up as much road space as larger family models. The current car has a 466-litre boot and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, making it easier to carry a mixture of passengers and luggage. You can choose from petrol, hybrid and fully electric versions. All provide a high seating position and an easy driving experience around town. Hyundai’s 5-year, unlimited-mileage new-car warranty also provides useful reassurance, while the high-voltage battery in electric and hybrid models has separate long-term cover. Euro NCAP awarded the Kona 4 stars when it was tested in 2023. It achieved good adult and child protection scores, but its safety-assistance result was weaker than those of some rivals. The current generation is also too new to have built up extensive long-term reliability data, so it’s more accurate to highlight its warranty than describe it as a proven class leader.

5. Honda Civic

Pros
  • Excellent reliability survey score
  • Strong 5-star safety rating
  • Spacious, practical family cabin
Cons
  • Rear headroom can feel tight
  • Infotainment feels relatively basic
  • Purchase price remains high
Used Honda Civic for sale

The latest Honda Civic combines strong efficiency with an enjoyable driving experience. Its hybrid system feels smooth in everyday use, while the suspension balances comfort with controlled handling. There’s plenty of rear legroom and the hatchback has a 410-litre boot. Some versions provide a little more capacity when the underfloor storage area is included, although the sloping roof can limit headroom for taller rear passengers. Reliability is a major strength. The Civic achieved a 97.3% score in a recent survey, placing it third out of 30 family cars. Honda also ranked first among the manufacturers included. The Civic received 5 stars from Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2022. Standard equipment includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control. The interior is practical and well assembled, although the infotainment system feels basic beside some newer alternatives. The Civic can also cost more to buy than several mainstream family hatchbacks.

Which reliable family car should you choose?

The Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic stand out for their strong recent reliability results. Both also provide efficient hybrid power and comprehensive safety equipment.

Choose the Skoda Octavia if boot and passenger space matter most, but inspect its electrical and infotainment systems carefully. The Mazda CX-5 provides more SUV space and achieved a strong safety result, although long-term evidence for the latest generation is still developing.

The Hyundai Kona is compact, practical and available with several powertrains. Its long warranty provides reassurance, but its 4-star Euro NCAP result places it behind the other cars in this list for independently assessed safety.

Whatever you choose, check the car’s service history, MOT record and outstanding recall work. An AA Vehicle Check can also identify information including outstanding finance, recorded write-offs, theft records and mileage discrepancies. You can arrange an independent vehicle inspection for additional reassurance before buying.
