Most Reliable SUVs To Consider In 2026

Jack Evans

By Jack Evans

Buying a car is a major financial commitment. Choosing a dependable sport utility vehicle (SUV) can reduce the risk of unexpected repair bills and time off the road.

Reliability depends on more than the manufacturer’s badge. The engine, gearbox, generation, age, mileage and maintenance history can all affect how dependable a car proves to be. A well-maintained car lower down this list may be a better purchase than a neglected example with a stronger reputation.

We’ve reviewed the available evidence to identify 5 SUVs worth considering for reliability in 2026.

How we assessed reliability

We used AA Cars road tests and guidance from AA mechanics, alongside repair-request data from Warranty wise, warranty-claim data from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) and official manufacturer information.

AA Cars reviews combine real-world road testing with technical input from AA mechanics. However, the external reliability datasets cover different vehicle ages, reporting periods and sample groups. This means the order below is an evidence-led editorial assessment, rather than a statistical league table.

1. Toyota RAV4

Pros
  • Strong used-car reliability evidence
  • Durable hybrid components
  • Spacious, practical family cabin
Cons
  • Engine gets noisy under load
  • Older infotainment feels dated
  • No seven-seat option
Used Toyota RAV4 for sale

The Toyota RAV4 has the strongest overall reliability evidence among the SUVs in this guide. Warrantywise’s 2026 Reliability Index placed the RAV4 fourth across all eligible used models, with a score of 79.9 out of 100. It was the highest-ranked SUV in the index’s top 10. The study used around 1.6 million data points from cars aged between 3 and 15 years, with at least 250 vehicles included for each model. The score applies to the RAV4 model range. It does not relate exclusively to the plug-in hybrid or one particular generation. AA Cars also identifies reliability as one of the RAV4’s main strengths. Our mechanic guidance says the hybrid battery, electric motor and inverter usually last well when the car receives the correct servicing. Before buying, check the service record, 12-volt battery, suspension, tyre wear and infotainment system. The petrol engine and electric motor should also work together smoothly during a test drive. Toyota introduced an all-new RAV4 in 2026, with UK deliveries beginning in June. Every UK version uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but this generation is too new for a meaningful long-term reliability verdict. Eligible Toyotas can receive a service-activated warranty until the car reaches 10 years or 100,000 miles. Qualifying hybrid-battery cover can continue for up to 15 years when the car receives the required checks.

2. Volkswagen T-Roc

Pros
  • Low warranty-claim rate
  • Compact, practical SUV shape
  • Manageable everyday running costs
Cons
  • New generation lacks long-term data
  • No seven-seat option
  • Three-year warranty trails Hyundai
Used Volkswagen T-Roc for sale

The first-generation Volkswagen T-Roc performed strongly in recent warranty-claim data. WSG recorded a claim rate of 6.35% between May 2025 and April 2026. This placed the T-Roc third among the high-volume used models included in its analysis. WSG only included models with at least 250 issued policies. Volkswagen launched the original T-Roc in 2017 and introduced the second generation in November 2025. Given the dates covered by the WSG study, its findings will primarily reflect first-generation used cars rather than the new model. The latest T-Roc has not been available long enough to build a comparable reliability record. As a used car, the T-Roc combines manageable dimensions with a practical five-seat interior. Its raised driving position also gives it the feel of a larger SUV without making it difficult to use around town. Volkswagen’s original new-car warranty lasts for 3 years or 60,000 miles. Mileage is unlimited during the first 2 years, before the 60,000-mile limit applies in year 3. Check the exact engine, service record and remaining warranty cover before buying.

3. Dacia Duster

Pros
  • Strong used-SUV reliability score
  • Affordable average repair costs
  • Spacious, practical family cabin
Cons
  • Electrical faults need careful checking
  • Cabin materials feel basic
  • Latest model lacks long-term data
Used Dacia Duster for sale

The Dacia Duster is a practical choice if you want a reliable SUV without the cost or complexity of many premium alternatives. Warrantywise gave the Duster a score of 79 out of 100 in its 2024 SUV Reliability Index, placing it third. The average repair request was £685.63, while electrical faults were the most frequently recorded repair category. Cars in the dataset averaged 8 years old and had covered around 68,500 miles. These findings largely relate to established, previous-generation Dusters. Dacia introduced the current model in late 2024, with new engines, more technology and a different platform. It should not automatically inherit the older model’s reliability record, and more ownership data is needed before drawing firm conclusions. The Duster’s spacious cabin, large boot and relatively straightforward controls make it well suited to family use. Four-wheel-drive versions also provide useful ability on rough tracks and slippery surfaces. Every new Dacia includes a 3-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. The Dacia Zen programme can add a one-year or 18,000-mile warranty extension after a qualifying dealer service, subject to the car meeting the scheme’s age and mileage requirements.

4. Nissan Qashqai

Pros
  • Well-maintained cars cover high mileages
  • Smooth, efficient e-Power driving
  • Smart, user-friendly interior
Cons
  • Claim rate sits above average
  • Service history needs careful checking
  • Boot trails class leaders
Used Nissan Qashqai for sale Nissan Qashqai Review

The Nissan Qashqai remains one of the UK’s most familiar family SUVs. Its practical interior, manageable size and broad engine range have helped it appeal to drivers since the first generation arrived in 2007. AA Cars has seen well-maintained Qashqais covering more than 100,000 miles while continuing to perform well. Our mechanic guidance stresses the importance of regular servicing, as missed oil changes can contribute to timing-chain and turbocharger problems on some engines. Buyers should also check for damp, suspension noises and electrical faults. The wider warranty evidence is less convincing. WSG’s April 2026 report recorded a 20.11% claim rate for the Qashqai, slightly above the study’s overall average of 19.44%. This does not mean every Qashqai will prove unreliable, but it shows that the model should not be presented as an outright class leader. Choosing the right engine and finding a car with a complete maintenance record are particularly important. The current Qashqai e-Power provides smooth, electric-like acceleration without needing to be plugged in. AA Cars also praises its efficient urban performance and straightforward interior, although its boot is not the largest in the class.

5. Hyundai Santa Fe

Pros
  • Seven seats fitted as standard
  • Five-year unlimited-mileage warranty
  • Spacious, flexible family interior
Cons
  • Current model lacks long-term data
  • Large dimensions hinder tight parking
  • Hybrid-only range limits choice
Used Hyundai Santa Fe for sale

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the most qualified inclusion in this guide. The current fifth-generation model arrived in the UK in 2024, so there is not yet enough evidence to judge its long-term reliability with the same confidence as an established RAV4, T-Roc or Duster. It still has clear strengths as a family SUV. The Santa Fe comes with 7 seats as standard, while selected versions offer a 6-seat layout. The hybrid has a 725-litre boot when the third row is folded, giving families plenty of space for pushchairs, luggage and other bulky items. Hyundai’s warranty also provides useful reassurance. New cars receive a 5-year unlimited-mileage warranty, while the high-voltage battery in hybrid and electric models is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. A long warranty does not prove that a car will be fault-free, but it can reduce the financial risk if a covered problem develops. When considering a used Santa Fe, check that servicing is up to date and confirm whether any manufacturer recalls or software updates remain outstanding. Make sure there are no warning lights and that the hybrid system changes between petrol and electric power smoothly.

Which reliable SUV should you choose?

The Toyota RAV4 has the strongest overall case, supported by AA mechanic guidance and current used-car repair data. Its hybrid system has also developed a solid reputation when maintained correctly.

The first-generation Volkswagen T-Roc performed well in recent warranty-claim data and suits drivers who want a compact SUV. The previous-generation Dacia Duster is worth considering if value, space and manageable repair costs matter most.

The Nissan Qashqai remains a practical mainstream option, but its latest claim rate was slightly above average. Check the service record and condition carefully before buying.

Choose the Hyundai Santa Fe if you need 7 seats, a large boot and the reassurance of a long manufacturer warranty. The current generation is still too new to call a proven long-term reliability leader.

Whatever you choose, check the service record, MOT history, recall status and exact engine specification. An AA Vehicle Check can identify issues such as outstanding finance, mileage discrepancies and recorded insurance write-offs. An AA Vehicle Inspection can also provide an independent assessment of the car’s condition before you buy.
