Known for practical space and low running costs, it’s made its mark as a strong entry point for electric car ownership in the UK. The MG4 is designed for everyday family life, being easy to drive, roomy inside, quick to charge and well-equipped even on base models. Launched in 2022, it’s MG’s first electric hatchback to compete with rivals like the Cupra Born, Renault Megane E-Tech and BYD Dolphin. Battery sizes and a couple of different trim levels focus on simplicity, efficiency and value, with the XPower variant covering sportier performance. All versions are widely praised for their good range and standard technology. While some rivals offer more comfort, they usually charge more for it. With plenty of space in the back for passengers and useful boot capacity, the MG4 is a practical choice for everyday electric motoring.
All MG4 models come with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control as standard. Trophy trim and XPower variants add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist – especially helpful on busy roads. All versions are well-kitted out though, with the MG4 scoring a full five stars in Euro NCAP safety testing.
The MG4 is only available as an all-electric vehicle, with no petrol or diesel options. The entry-level Standard Range version offers a 50.8kWh battery, while Long Range and Extended Range versions have larger batteries providing more power and improved range. The high-performance XPower model provides four-wheel drive and a sportier experience.
Every MG4 includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-inch digital driver display. Entry models have basic climate control, while Trophy trim and the XPower variant add wireless charging, extra cameras and heated front seats. The system supports common sat nav and music apps, but the interface can be fiddly to use on the move.
Being fully electric, the MG4’s running costs are much lower than petrol or diesel cars. The base model has an official range of about 218 miles, with Long Range getting you 281 miles and the Extended Range claiming up to 323 miles per charge. Keep in mind that real-world range may be lower, especially in cold weather or on the motorway.
The MG4 is new to the road, meaning there's not been too much time for common issues to come up, but check for past recalls (notably early lock faults in 2022) and ensure all software and charging systems are up to date. Spend some time using the electronics to make sure they function as they should. For added reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
MG4 reliability has been mixed. In the 2023 WhatCar? survey, it ranked below average among electric cars, mainly due to minor electrical glitches and faults. MG offers a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty on all MG4s, which provides peace of mind even for used buyers.
