  Mercedes AMG GT

  The AMG GT does a good job of flying under the radar – at least in some respects. While not as extroverted as models such as Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage, which are perhaps its closest rivals, it manages to deliver a unique combination of thunderous V8 power, striking design, and everyday usability – with a choice of sports car or four-door GT bodywork, the former being more out-there than the latter, which is much more subtle way of packing up to 800bhp. Not for everyone, of course, but certainly not a car you’ll forget having driven.

  Mazda CX30

  In the crowded compact crossover segment it can be incredibly difficult to stand out. With competition from the likes of the Ford Puma, Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota C-HR, many carmakers have decided to chase bold styling or headline-grabbing electrification in a bid to get noticed. Mazda however, sees things a little differently. The Japanese brand has decided that gimmicks are not for them and has instead chosen to carve out a niche at the top end of the market. The resulting car – the CX-30 – was launched back in 2019 and the years since have seen the model develop a strong reputation as one of the best-finished, most premium-feeling cars in its class.

  Kia Stonic

  Over recent years, the competition among high-riding compact SUVs has really heated up thanks to the success of the likes of the Ford Puma, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke. In such a crowded marketplace, it can be difficult for carmakers to muscle their way into people’s thinking. However, since launching the Stonic back in 2017, that is exactly what Kia has managed to do. The car is firmly aimed at the family market and spurns the sporty handling seen on many of its rivals in favour of a more sensible and stress-free approach to driving.

  Kia Soul

  Kia was one of the first manufacturers to bring an affordable EV to market with the first Soul back in 2016. With a competitive range, generous standard equipment, and a relaxing driving experience, the Soul EV is efficient but also a bit different. Among the Soul EV’s main rivals are other small electric SUVs and hatchbacks, such as the Peugeot e-2008, Vauxhall Mokka Electric, and Hyundai Kona Electric. While some rivals offer larger boots or slightly more up-to-date interiors, the Soul EV distinguishes itself with its quirky styling and strong equipment levels, making it a solid contender despite the growing competition.

  Kia Sorento

  CO2 emissions: 37-174g/km It’s cars like the Sorento which show just how far Kia has come. Far from some kind of value-focused brand, Kia is now making cars which look and feel very upmarket, and this includes the Sorento. As a spacious seven-seater, the Sorento is ideal for families, yet with plenty of tech on board and a refined driving style, it’s also a great option for drivers, too.

  Kia threw a curveball when it launched the Proceed in 2019. Arriving as a stylish Shooting Brake-style estate car, it stood out from the brand’s range of practical and straightforward models as something a little different. However, with a well-sized boot and a well-made cabin, this handsome-looking car has far more going for it than just looks alone.
