The Jaguar X Type diesel has been much maligned by a biased motoring press without appropriate consideration or justification. I have had 3 interrupted by a brief period of BMW 3 series ownership. If you believe the motoring press the Bavarian mid range executive car is the ultimate driving machine. In my experience it was the quickest route to putting my back into spasm due to the offset driving position and the quickest route to boredom on a journey of any length. With a cockpit of black plastic and brushed aluminum it purports to be cutting edge but is in fact like something out the seventies with little by way of gadgetry to keep you amused. Compare that to the sumptuous leather heated seats of the Jaguar which hold you firm and keep you comfortable mile after mile guided by your 7 inch SAT NAV guided climate controlled environment. The steering on the BMW 3 series may be fractionally tighter and more direct but that is marginal and is more than compensated for by the the limpet like road holding of the Jaguar in all road conditions in all seasons. Road holding on the BMW is fine April to September, if its not too wet, but you need to invest in winter tyres to drive with any confidence in the winter road conditions, where I live for the rest of the year. In the 18 months I owned a 3 series nobody ever stopped me to say I really think your car looks great. It is a weekly occurrence with the Jaguar X Type. The BMW is a triumph of marketing over engineering. The Jaguar X Type is engineering excellence which was victimised by negative press marketing. The BMW 3 series left me cold, I always leave my X Type with a smile on my face and looking forward to my next trip.
