The Citroen Berlingo is a mainstay for families, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who needs reliable space without fuss. Designed with practicality firmly at its core, the Berlingo began as a van-based MPV in the late 1990s and has matured with each new version. The second generation (2008–2018) brought more comfort and improved engines, while the third generation (2018–present) blends everyday usability with sharper looks and even smarter storage options. Available in five-seater or the XL seven-seater varieties, it offers plenty of space for the family, luggage, sports equipment, camping stuff or whatever else you might need to bring along.
Today, the Berlingo stands out by focusing on what matters most for family and hobby life: plenty of space, configurable seating and useful tech. Its sliding rear doors stay safe in tight spots, and the tall roofline offers more headroom than most rivals. While still sharing its roots with the Peugeot Partner, the Berlingo often feels a step ahead for families thanks to three full-sized rear seats and clever compartments. It holds its own against rivals like the Ford Tourneo Connect or Vauxhall Combo Life, especially if you value a simplified, stress-free ownership experience.
The latest Citroen Berlingo (from 2018) comes with a full suite of modern safety aids. Expect lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, fatigue alert and multiple airbags as standard on most trims, with Isofix mountings fitted on all rear seats. This means even entry-level Berlingos are impressively equipped, giving you greater peace of mind for everyday driving with the family in tow. Second-generation models from 2008 also have a good selection of safety tech as standard, with more advanced features included depending on the trim level.
The Berlingo range features a choice of petrol and diesel engines. Earlier models offer 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel units, while more recent versions include a 1.2-litre turbo petrol (PureTech) and a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel in various power outputs. An all-electric version, the e-Berlingo, is now available as well, though there aren't many on the used market yet. Manual and automatic gearboxes are offered, depending on engine and trim. All options offer solid performance, even feeling reasonably powered in the seven-seater XL version.
Recent Berlingos (from 2018 onwards) feature an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Some trims add sat-nav and rear parking sensors too. Entry-level models include air-con and cruise control, while higher trims bring luxuries like automatic lights and wipers, as well as adjustable lumbar support. Practicality-focused tech throughout trim levels, such as modular rear seating and overhead storage, remains a Berlingo hallmark.
Fuel efficiency depends on engine and age. According to official figures, the 1.2-litre petrol returns around 45–51mpg, while the 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel can achieve up to 68mpg combined. Older 1.6 diesels typically score 55–65mpg. Some larger-engined or automatic models drop slightly lower, but the Berlingo generally keeps running costs reasonable for such a big vehicle.
Check for a full service history, listen for knocks from the suspension and pay close attention to the condition of sliding doors. Inspect for interior wear – this is a family car, after all – and test all the electrics. If you want added peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection for an independent, professional assessment.
The Berlingo has built a strong reputation for reliability. Diesel engines, in particular, are known for their longevity when serviced regularly. Some owners report minor electrical gremlins, but major issues aren't so common. Routine maintenance and regular checks should result in low-stress ownership, making it a sensible, capable choice for family life.
Pre-2018 Berlingos mostly used a 1.6-litre petrol or diesel engine, with some 1.2-litre options also available. From 2018 onwards, you’ll mainly see a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or a 1.5-litre diesel under the bonnet, alongside new electric variants. Power output and gearbox options differ, so check out a couple of different options to find the one that works best for you.
