The Citroën DS5 was built from 2012 to 2018 as the flagship of Citroën's DS range before DS became its own brand. Its bold looks and innovative inside make it a viable alternative to other executive cars like the Audi A4 or Volkswagen Passat. Facelifts brought tweaks to engines and emissions, helping drivers keep running costs down. Whether as a diesel, petrol or rare hybrid, the DS5 offers safety, comfort and style – and plenty of standard kit. While there may be less room in the rear than some rival cars, the front seats have plenty of support for longer journeys and the boot has ample space. If you want a premium hatch with personality, the DS5 is well worth a look.
The Citroën DS5 comes well equipped for safety, with a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. There's six airbags and stability and traction control as standard. Many models add front and rear parking aids, lane departure warning and an emergency call feature, all helping to keep you and your passengers protected.
There are four engines to choose from: a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol, 1.6- and 2.0-litre diesels, and a unique diesel-electric Hybrid4 that provides the lowest running costs but has less agility. The 2.0-litre diesel (manual or auto) is the most common and still balances strong performance with efficiency.
Even early DS5 models come loaded with tech. Think dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trim levels come with a sat nav, front parking sensors and a distinctive panoramic roof.
Fuel economy varies by engine. The 1.6 diesel is the most economical non-hybrid, offering up to 64mpg. The 2.0-litre diesel manages between 46 and 57mpg, depending on gearbox choice. The Hybrid4 is the cheapest to drive, reaching up to 80mpg on average. Petrols are the least efficient, with a figure closer to 42mpg.
Look for regular servicing and evidence of careful upkeep, especially on hybrids which can be more complex. Ensure the suspension is comfortable and listen for any clunks, as the firm ride can wear components quickly. For extra peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection service.
Reliability is a mixed picture. Many DS5 owners enjoy trouble-free motoring, but some report electrical or hybrid system issues. Maintenance shouldn't cost a fortune though as Citroën parts aren't that expensive.
